Selling Art but at What Price?

Selling Art but at What Price?

I've been adding my original artwork to my online store for the collectors from around the world that have expressed interest.

I've kept most of my artwork to myself for the last 13 years. Not always by choice mind you. It's hard to sell artwork online, and I did a lot of stumbling along the way.

I've read a lot of advice about how others price their work. Hourly wage plus supplies. WidthxHeight divided by something else. There really is no perfect formula or solution to how you decide to sell your artwork. No matter what you do, someone will tell you you're doing it wrong.

No matter what you do, at some point you will think you're doing it wrong and you'll try something new. That's how we learn.

What I've learned from all my years as a small artist trying to make it in a really big world is this. You can price to sell or you can price to keep. It's as simple as it sounds.

Some art I am okay with someone else having it, other art I really need to be convinced to give it away forever.

So the reasoning behind most prices for a long time is simple. What it would cost for me to be okay with letting it go forever.?

Some are worth more for me to keep, and some are more important to send out into the world to fans that really appreciate the opportunity to get a really great piece of art, and a piece of a living artists history. (self shill!)

The one thing I had to break out of thinking is that everything an artist does is instantly worth lots of money. To some people it is, to most though, it isn't. I also had to learn that starting small and low is okay too. Getting those commandingly high prices for your artwork takes years of lore building while creating a vast catalogue of artwork.

Who knows, original artwork might be worth a lot more in the future as we get flooded with AIart while moving deeper into blockchain tech and tying digital art collectibles to their actual physical counterparts.
