India has launched e-RUPI Today on 2nd Aug 2021. Let's Break-Down what is e-RUPI?
e-RUPI is a system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on top of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. e-RUPI voucher is a Unique string ( like coupon code) or QR-code that can be sent to anyone's mobile directly and the intended person can use it to make payments. What makes it interesting is that it is a cardless and contactless system. This shows India is gradually moving towards digital payment with first UPI, then now e-RUPI and we all know that RBI is working on creating India's Own Cryptocurrency.
What is the Use of e-RUPI?
There can be multiple use cases in the future for e-RUPI as this can be directly given to the intended person and the person can use it
For now, e-RUPI will be used by the Indian govt. to provide direct benefit transfer (DBT) to the people without the use of a card or internet service to the user's verified phone number. This improves the transparency in DBT, Earlier Indian govt. used to transfer money to the person's verified account or through various committees which were causing the issue of money not reaching the intended person, But now using e-RUPI system govt. can directly transfer the voucher code intended person's verified mobile number. He/She can use the voucher to avail various welfare schemes that are launched by the Indian govt.
Suppose govt. want's to provide funds to poor people for health services, children welfare, or any other service to underprivileged people. Earlier, govt. used to provide the money directly in the bank account of the intended person. The issue was some people were not using that money for a specific purpose, or corrupt political/people in the middle used to take most of the money while showing the correct data on paper.
With e-RUPI, there is no one in the middle to eat up the money. It will go directly to the beneficiary's phone number.
Now since these e-RUPI vouchers are not transferable to anyone else and it can only be used for the specific purpose for which it was sent.
This also helps govt. to directly track /monitor the use of voucher codes by the public like how many people have availed of the specific service.
Is e-RUPI a Digital Currency?
No, it is more like a voucher/coupon/gift card code.
