Crypto’s next altseason may have fewer winners: Wintermute
But it does give me something to have a whinge about.
How can it be ALTSEASON if there few winners?
The first altseason was in 2017 when Bitcoins dominance fell to 45% - 25th February and 19th June 2017. Prior to that there were just not enough altcoins in existence to move the needle.

- measures the performance of altcoins compared to Bitcoin
- over a specific period, typically 90 days
- 75% of the top 50-100 altcoins outperform Bitcoin
- used to be top 100 but the bar has had to belowered along expectations
- “Altcoin Season” 🚀🚀🚀
There are other things to consider like Bitcoin dominance but we won’t head in that direction.
There has only been 2 recognised Altseasons so far, just 2017 and 2021. @BitcoinBaby did call 2024 but that was in jest. Don’t think it latest long enough or met any of the preconditions. But it was definitely the time to sell those altcoins.
The 2 main reasons we will probably not see another altseason (unless the definition gets watered down further)
- way too many altcoins (capital dilution)
- institutional capital tends to be more discerning than retail
