The Dutch Defense is a chess opening characterized by the moves 1. d2d4 f7f5. It's an aggressive strategy employed by blacks, aiming to control the center of the board and prepare for a king-side attack. This opening is named after Elias Stein, a Dutch chess player who advocated its use in the 18th century.
This opening was advocated in a book published in 1789 in The Hague, Netherlands, hence the name Dutch Defense. The author Elias Stein was of Alsatian origin. According to him, f7f5 was the best possible response to 1. d2d4.
