In this post, we consider Alekhine's defense in chess games.
1. e2e4, g8f6. The move g8f6 is a key attribute of Alekhine's Defense. The main idea is to provoke whites on an attack and then suppress it and gain a positional advantage.
2. Suppose that whites move is e4e5. The white pawn attacks the black Knight on f6.
2. …. f6d5. Black Knight retreats to d5.
3. c2c4. The white pawn attacks the black Knight on d5.
3. ...d5b6. The black Knight retreats to b6.
4. d2d4. Whites capture the center of the chessboard.
4. … d7d6. The black pawn attacks the white pawn on e5.
5. f2f4. Whites support the white pawn on e5.
5. … d6e5. The black pawn captures the white pawn on e5.
If whites move d4e5 then blacks trade Queens. This prevent whites from using a castling move and gives to blacks a positional advantage. If whites move f4e5 then the black pawn attack the white pawn on d4 with move c7c5 which leads to the similar case. In both cases blacks suppress the attack of whites and gain the positional advantage.
The other variant is: 1. e2e4, g8f6 2. e4e5, f6d5 3. d2d4 d7d6 4. g1f3.
In this case, blacks can capture the white pawn on e5 or attack the white Knight on f3 by the black Bishop’s move c8g4.
Alekhine's Defense is a chess opening introduced by fourth World Champion Alexander Alekhine in the 1921 Budapest tournament in games against Endre Steiner and Fritz Sämisch. It provokes whites to advance center pawns, intending to undermine them later. While considered slightly inferior, it remains a sound, provocative weapon frequently used for counter-attacking, notably by Fischer, Ivanchuk, and Carlsen.
The Alekhine's Defense was more popular in the past. For instance, Fischer used it in two games against Boris Spassky in the World Chess Championship 1972.
A game by Napoléon Bonaparte from the 19th century shows the oldest known example of Alekhine's Defense being employed in a game.
Core Idea: Blacks goal is to turn whites advanced pawns (specifically in the center) into targets, using moves by Knights and get a positional advantage after trading Queens.
