Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis

By leejhen | All about Health | 30 Nov 2020

I remember during my elementary days. I swim in the flood without caring if it's dirty or not.

When I was in grade 3. We played in the rain then we saw a flood as big as the swimming pool. Yes it was a very huge area. Near our school.

My classmates immediately run in the rain happily playing. I was tempted looking at them happily playing under the rain. And swimming in the flood like swimming on the beach. They are so very carefree and I missed these days.

In the end, I was scolded by my mother. Lecturing me that it is very dirty to touch the flood by my feet. How much more if I swim and catch bacteria and germs on it. Thankfully, nothing happened to me. Maybe it's because in the past the surroundings are much cleaner and fresh than now. Just maybe.

Let's go back to our topic. Does any of you experience this kind of disease? It's very scary and dirty, right? Nobody wants to be sick especially if it's our children. We mother are very cautious and caring for their health.

But what about those children outside? Those who don't have parents and are roaming around asking for foods especially in the market. They are many of them.

But thanks God they did not get sick even though no one cared for them.

How many of you are aware and have enough knowledge about this disease? If you're not very familiar with this let me discuss it with you.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is an infection caused by leptospira microbes that came from animals.

Here in the Philippines, the carrier of the disease is the disgusting rats.

Leptospirosis is a very serious disease and not a joke. You can prevent this kind of disease if it was detected early and have immediate proper medication.

How can you get this disease?

The microbes will enter through your eyes, nose, mouth, and skin with open wounds. Microbes will probably enter your body if you touched wet soil or plants with contaminated rat urine. Especially when your body touched with a dirty flood where there is the urine of the rats and any other possible germs, bacteria, and microbes.

  • High Fever

  • Body chills

  • Red eyes ( some patients have red eyes)

Prevention:

  • Avoid swimming in the floods and descend into contaminated water.

  • If you can't avoid going down in the floods use boots.

  • Suppress the rats in your house, street, and drainage.

  • Maintain cleanliness from inside till the outside of your house.

  • If there is a high fever for two days and you know that he or she swims or descend in the flood. Just Don't hesitate to bring them to the nearest hospital.

The right thing to do to prevent too much flood in the street caused by throwing of garbage:

  • Throw away your garbage in the proper place.

  • Segregate your waste garbage from biodegradable to none biodegradable.

  • Avoid throwing your garbage in the streets especially in the drainage which can lead to stock up and floods.

This disease can be prevented by drinking antibiotics like penicillin and doxycycline. And it's very important to finish the Doctor's dosage and required medications. Because there is a possibility for this disease to come back if you don't follow the proper dosage and medications.

If it's severe Leptospirosis, you need to be admitted to the hospital as soon as possible.
