Childhood Before Phones: A Love Letter to the Messy, Magical Past

You want to know what it was really like? Okay, picture this:

You wake up to sunlight, not notifications. The house is quiet except for the hum of the coffee maker and your mom clanking pans in the kitchen. No buzzes, no pings just the sound of your own thoughts. You slurp down cereal while reading the back of the box like it’s the morning news, then bolt outside before your parents can ask where you’re going.

The neighborhood is your kingdom. You and your friends meet up without planning no texts, no DMs, just a silent understanding that after school, you’ll all be at the big oak tree by 3:30. Someone’s got a half-deflated soccer ball, someone else has a juice box they’re willing to share but only if you’re really their friend. You play until someone’s mom leans out a window and yells, "DINNER!" in that tone that means "now, not five minutes from now."

You don’t have a camera in your pocket, so you memorize things instead, the way the light slants through the trees in late afternoon, the smell of rain on hot pavement, your best friend’s laugh when you tell that stupid joke for the hundredth time. If you want to remember it, you have to. No second chances, no scrolling back.

And oh, the boredom. Glorious, aching boredom. Staring at the ceiling on a rainy day, listening to the same mixtape until the lyrics wear grooves in your brain. Drawing dumb comics in the margins of your notebook. Calling your friend’s house and praying they pick up, not their older sister who still terrifies you.

You fight with your siblings over the TV remote. You wait forever for your favorite song to play on the radio, finger hovering over the record button of your boombox. You fall off your bike, skin your knee, and limp home to the sting of peroxide. There’s no recording it, no posting it, just you, the pain, and the weird pride of surviving it.

And when night comes, you lie in bed with the glow-in-the-dark stars peeling off your ceiling, replaying the day in your head like a movie only you can see. No likes, no updates, no pressure, just you and your own life, thick and real and entirely yours.

That’s what it was like. And some days, God, I miss it so much it aches.
