Portugal Stolen: The Hidden Extreme Poverty

Hidden Extreme Poverty

Portugal hides misery behind the façade of “Europe.” The net minimum wage (€774.30) doesn’t cover the cost of living (€1,622 with rent). You pay 43% of GDP in taxes — income tax on your salary, VAT on bread, fees on electricity — and you’re left with pennies.

You live for the State, not for yourself.

Young people emigrate, the elderly survive on €400 pensions, and the middle class is a myth. It’s extreme poverty masked by smartphones and shopping malls. Production (Economy)

The Portuguese economy is a façade:
tourism (15% of GDP) and agriculture (2-3%) sustain a per capita GDP of €25,000, half the wealthy EU average (€37,000). Without strong industry or innovation (R&D at 1.6% of GDP), it’s a country that sells sun and cork, like Brazil or Morocco, while pretending to be “developed.”

Debt:   Public debt at 98.7% of GDP, external debt at 200%. Interest payments drain 7% of the budget, like in Argentina or South Africa. Portugal lives off EU loans, paying dearly to maintain the illusion of stability, while the worker is squeezed.

State Spending:   The State collects 43% of GDP (€110 billion) in taxes (income tax, VAT, Social Security, fees). It spends 35% on pensions, 15% on healthcare with long queues, 10% on degraded schools. Only 5-7% goes to roads or trains, which barely exist in the interior. It’s a European Brazil: high taxes, low return.

Infrastructure: Highways and internet disguise it, but trains don’t connect the interior, the NHS makes you wait months, and rents in Lisbon (€1,000) are unaffordable. The country is a shiny tourist Lisbon with a forgotten Alentejo, like Nigeria, where only the capitals pretend progress.

Conclusion: This portrait of hidden poverty is the fault of PS and PSD, who for 40 years have choked Portugal with taxes and debts, without investing in industry or easing the worker’s burden.
