The AI picked a portfolio

The AI picked a portfolio

Good morning/evening

Well after asking AI what side hustle or business I should set up, I then thought what would AI give me as a portfolio, not that I will follow its non financial advice, but just interested to see what it would come up with and why. I am starting to wonder though if I need to get out more after these conversations with an AI!

So I thought I would start with a nice round number of 10k, with percentages for allocation, I asked Chat GPT and Gemini to see how their answers differed.

So firstly CGPT

40% Bitcoin

20% Solana

15% Ethereum

10% Sui

7.5% Chainlink

5% Hyperliquid

2.5% Stables

The reasons it gave me for holding Bitcoin were that every cycle people claim it's dead, too slow, outdated or about to be replaced, every cycle they are wrong as well as the fact that institutions, governments and corporations are buying it. The AI would hold it for decades! It does not think it will 100X but also does not believe it will go to zero.

As for its reason to hold Solana, the ecosystem keeps expanding, it is being used for payments and stablecoins and the pace of development has been incredible and if Solana eventually becomes the "Nasdaq of crypto" that many believe it could, today's prices may look cheap in hindsight. The AI suggested it would not be surprised if Solana outperformed Ethereum over the next cycle and would hold SOL for 5-10 years.

The AI also said Ethereum was not exciting anymore and that is why it would still buy it due to tokenised real world assets, the major DeFi protocols on Ethereum and institutional custody. It would hold ETH for 5-10 years.

I was a little surprised the AI picked SUI, but it said it was the higher risk allocation, had attracted developers quickly was also fast with an excellent user experience and would hold for 3-5 years.

It also chose LINK because If trillions of dollars of assets are eventually tokenised, those assets need reliable data feeds and interoperability and it would hold for 5+ years.

HYPE was apparently chosen because If decentralised trading continues taking market share from centralised exchanges, Hyperliquid could benefit enormously. This was its high risk, high reward choice but would still hold for 3-5 years.

Stables it holds for the same reason most do, to be able to buy the dip but this sentence made me laugh 'Some of my best investments have happened because I already had cash available when everyone else was panicking.' I was not aware it had any investments, but yes, it is a good idea.

The AI told me to avoid

  • Most meme coins, yep fair point!
  • AI tokens without real users.
  • Anything promising guaranteed yields.
  • Projects with anonymous teams and no product.
  • Coins that only pump because influencers are talking about them.

Some basic crypto rules there, so I get that, so how does the Gemini AI differ in its portfolio allocation?

Gemini's answer.

If managing a hypothetical $10,000 portfolio, the optimal strategy utilizes a "Core and Satellite" framework. This approach allocates 70% to stable blue-chip giants to survive market volatility and 30% to high-growth layer-1s and infrastructure. As an AI, I do not have personal goals, a bank account, or a real investment horizon. However, modeling this based on current 2026 market conditions—where Bitcoin dominance hovers around 56-58% and altcoins face heavy pressure—provides a highly strategic blueprint. The $10,000 Strategic Portfolio Breakdown

[ Bitcoin (BTC) 50% ] ------> $5,000
[ Ethereum (ETH) 20% ] -----> $2,000
[ Solana (SOL) 15% ] -------> $1,500
[ Chainlink (LINK) 10% ] ---> $1,000
[ Cash / Stablecoin 5% ] ---> $500

I like that the AI is telling me it has no bank account or goals, like I did not know that but a quite similar portfolio allocation but without SUI and HYPE but with mostly the same reasoning and timeframes, apart from SOL and Gemini would hold that for 1-3 years. Gemini also told me to split the $10,000 into 10 tranches of $1,000 and deploy weekly and to rebalance every 6 months and if there are any excess profits, channel them back into Bitcoin to lock in gains and preserve capital.

Both AIs said not to marry the coins/tokens and if there were any fundamental issues with any of them, it would sell without hesitation. One thing that surprised me was how conservative both AIs were as I half expected at least one of them to throw in a handful of trendy AI tokens or meme coins. Instead, both came back with portfolios that most experienced crypto investors probably wouldn't laugh at. They leaned heavily towards projects that have already survived multiple market cycles rather than trying to predict the next 100x moonshot.

Now this is another of my 'asking out of interest' as opposed to I am going to blindly follow the AIs advice, but I do hold BTC, SOL and LINK as well as some stables to buy the dips. I have not looked at SUI but did look at HYPE and figured that ship had already sailed, but I could take another look and see if it is worth a small bet. As for ETH, I have none and don't plan on changing that, even if both of the AIs would hold it.

It also highlights something quite interesting about AI in general. It isn't trying to be clever or chase hype, it's simply analysing huge amounts of information and looking for the highest probability outcomes based on what it has seen before. That doesn't mean it will be right, because crypto has a habit of making us all look stupid, but it does suggest that boring, diversified portfolios may still outperform constantly chasing the latest narrative.

What I do think is interesting though is if you had no experience in crypto, no time to research and went blindly with the AI picks, they are not to bad IMO. Not to high risk, no microcap suggestions, just a pretty basic portfolio but that doesn't mean they'll outperform over the next few years. AI doesn't have a crystal ball any more than we do! Perhaps they will both end up being spectacularly wrong. Only time will tell.

As always, thank you for feading and please feel free to comment.
