A flock of birds sit on a leafless tree. A blue sky is the backdrop.

The grass is a lush, bright green. I stare at lawns and fields from my windows in disbelief. The green is unreal. Surreal. It is an intensely bright green, the first color in six months, and I can't believe it. I stare, I squint. My eyes which have been calibrated for sheets of white and swaths of gray are strained in the effort of acclimating to this other light. Green, and I want to reach out and adjust the settings on my television screen. Green and I've got to photoshop maybe five more ticks of maroon in the color balance to make it right.
But it is right. The scene is real: all the little, delicate, newly sprouted leaves, soft and tender, vibrant with youth. Taking this in, my heart almost aches as if heavy with the memory of betrayal. I have trusted this vision before only to have it slip away into dull tones and chill air. Shall I trust it again?
