Ironically, I side with AI's definition of what a musician truly is versus Webster's version, which includes the word performer. A performer is exactly that—a performer, not a musician. I'm biased, and this may be controversial, but the definition of a Musician to me is someone capable of reading music and playing an instrument by ear, at whatever level. Why?

Having a true appreciation of the art of music or the connection one feels when playing from the soul can't be replicated by pressing a button, or rhyming some words.  Playing saxophone, piano, and drums, I have grown to appreciate the value of scales. So to hear anyone mention they're a musician, but don't know any scale, or can't read any level of music, nor play by ear, makes it hard for me to acknowledge them as musicians. I would consider many rappers or hip-hop artists to be poets or wordsmiths. So to hear someone claiming they are a musician just because they pressed a few buttons lacks the craft, heart, and appreciation for music.

Personally to be honest and fair I checked out of music back in the early 2000's and have been only listening to instrumentals like Bonobo and Joey Pecarco and too many to mention. I haven't listened to popular music with lyrics for over 20+ years. Don't get me wrong there are hidden gems along the way but not enough for me to give music a chance anymore.
