As I write this post I am on a Cambly priority hour that I started 1 minutes passed 7:00PM. I have have my 5 minute break still loaded in the chamber with around 23 minutes left in the hour.
I most likely won't teach a student for even a minute this hour. Which isn't a bad thing. that means I make $2.55 for blogging, plus whatever tips this post may generate.
These freebie priority hours are few and far between these days.
When I first started tutoring on Cambly, a priority hour would be chalk full of students using a $5 for 5 minute free trial. I can yap for 5 minutes with anyone regardless on their proficiency with the English language.
Then meetings with students got longer in 2024. Which was a blessing. 15 minutes is just enough time to get through all the easiest small talk topics. Priority hours were easy to come by. I built a repour with a Chinese woman and spoke with her twice a week. Having those easy mid work day priority hours in addition my regulars made Cambly a fun, and productive side hustle.
In 2025 the students are not booking in for 30 minute meetings. This is fine, with the students that know how to hold a conversations. But holding a 30 minutes session with someone who is fiercely ESL is difficult.
2026 is looking like the slide will continue. Getting priroity hours is difficult. I have to really work to get to the minimum withdrawal level each week. Cambly, most of the time, is no longer free money.
I still like it though. I have a regular that checks in so often and making around $100 USD extra per month isn't nothing. I just don't think I will ever see a $200 week again.
The added benefit of Cambly being able to unlock my ReceiptHog money will keep me coming back for a while.
Cambly isn't bad its just not what it used to be.
