On July 13th I wrote about how Cambly was changing. PayPal is on its way out. As of November 11, 2026, Cambly will no longer pay tutors through PayPal, and everyone has to move to Stripe. This presented a large annoyance, because I will need to set up another wallet and ReceiptHog money will be locked for longer.
Well I was wrong.
I have added FreeCash to pair with ReceiptHog for PayPal payments. Withdrawals won't be as immediate as the were with Cambly, but it seem that FreeCash and ReceiptHog are on similar payment cadences.
As for Cambly, the move to Stripe is a huge improvement for three reasons.
Lower Fees
PayPal has been quietly eating into tutor pay for a long time. In July, Cambly started charging a 2% fee on PayPal payouts, on top of whatever PayPal skims when it converts your USD into your local currency. If you’ve ever compared PayPal’s exchange rate to the real one, you know that skim isn’t small.
When you earn $10.20 an hour, every percentage point matters. Stripe still charges for currency conversion, so it isn’t free, but from what I’ve seen the total comes out lower than PayPal’s fee plus PayPal’s exchange-rate markup. More of what I earn stays with me, and for a project built on small amounts adding up, that’s the whole game.
Streamline Processed
With PayPal, getting paid was a multi-step chore. Cambly paid into PayPal, then I had to log in, convert the USD (at PayPal’s rate), and withdraw to my bank, which took a few more days. If I forgot, the money just sat there.
Stripe looks like it removes the middle steps. Cambly sends the payout, Stripe handles the conversion, and the money lands in my bank account. I don’t have to log in or remember a withdrawal. Payouts still run on Cambly’s Tuesday schedule, on whatever 1-, 2- or 4-week cycle you’ve chosen, once you clear the $20 minimum.
For someone who already juggles a dozen apps, faucets and side hustles, one less thing to babysit is a big win.
Straight into ShakePay
This is the part I’m most excited about. Stripe can pay directly into my Shakepay account. With PayPal, money going from Cambly into Bitcoin took a whole relay: Cambly → PayPal → bank → Shakepay → BTC. Each hop cost time, and sometimes money.
Now it’s Cambly → Stripe → Shakepay. My tutoring income lands right where I buy Bitcoin. For the 1BTC Project that means less friction between earning a dollar and stacking it as sats, which is exactly what this project is about.
