DECENT - my name suggestion for rebranding LeoFinance

By mango juice | 0mango-juice | 19 Aug 2023

Hello readers,

If you are an existing hive user of the Hive ecosystem, you must have heard of the name ‘LeoFinance’, as it is definitely one of the most well-known platforms and communities built on the Hive blockchain. The Leofinance has become a brand and also is pretty old and here for over 4 years now and also has a large user base already. But, there are many of us hive users who haven’t used their platform or joined the community and the main reason behind this would be the term ‘Finance’ in its name which at first glance gives the viewer a perspective that the platform may be related to the finance niche only. While the name attracts anyone who wants to get engaged with money or finance-related topics, the name is certainly not too attractive for people interested in other niches. Suppose you are a photography lover or love to watch or share your own art and have no interest in crypto or finance-related topics, why would you want to get yourself involved with the ‘Finance’ niche right?

In fact, it’s been 3 months since the LeoThreads, a short-from social media platform launched in Leofinance and unlike Leofinance’s long-form blogging which is focused on money or finance-related topics, this newly launched twitter platform is meant to be niche-less in order to get acceptable towards a larger audience base. No doubt The LeoThreads as a newly launched product is a hit and able to grab a decent user base within a short time span, but a large portion of Hive users are still unaware of this fact and may be still thinking LeoThreads is similar to Leofinance that only accepts finance-related topics, though it certainly does not. The problem may be in the name as it contains the big ‘Finance’ term in it and that’s where the need to get rebranded comes in place. A lot of people from the Leofinance and Hive community are already identifying this issue and talking about the name change and since Elon Musk changed their Twitter name to X, I guess the hype has even increased in the community for a rebranding of Leofinance. It has become a necessity to get rid of the Finance word and adapt something new to become more acceptable to a mass audience. Finance is a good topic, but it may be interesting to many of us, and maybe that's the reason many are getting scared or making this platform un-relatable to their taste. For a rising web3-based social media, this would be the last thing that we want.

As an old user of both Hive and Leofinance platforms, I have years of first-hand experience here and I can say with confidence that the team behind Leofinance is doing amazing work in the background. Talking about their latest achievements, back in May 2023 they launched 2 new products - the microblogging social media LeoThreads and their brand new UI not only that, they also partnered with a popular web3 project Zealy and launched a mega onboarding campaign to celebrate Leothreads. The total prize pool of this campaign was 10,000$ + 200k HP delegation and I was also one of the users who engaged deeply with the month-long ongoing campaign, participated in all the awesome tasks, and won a small slice from the reward pool. Damn, Leo kept me so hooked up during those days but I enjoyed every bit of it. No doubt the campaign really helped out Leo to onboard a good number of new users and they were successful to grow the LEO community by a whooping 3x with all their activities since then and have a more active monthly user base than ever.

Just recently the LEO team also published a proposal in DHF for promotion purposes with a big goal of onboarding a large number of user-base from outside the Hive ecosystem. For any social media to thrive, it's important to have a large amount of audience globally and go mainstream. If you are a Hive user and haven't looked into the proposal, I would recommend reading more about it and also voting for the proposal if you like their initiative.

Anyways, rebranding is certainly NOT an easy thing to execute and would attract a lot of attention - both positive and negative towards the brand. If we just look at the recent event of Twitter becoming X, a lot of controversies got created around it where some hated it and some loved it, but one thing is for sure though, literally everyone was talking about it. As for Leofinance, they have called all of us community members to get involved and suggest meaningful names that would fit well as a social platform. Everything in the current LEO user interface will remain the same but the name will get changed and among all the entries, the best name will be chosen and gets adapted by the platform. So like many of my fellow Leo users, I also put my thinking cap on, and after a little brainstorming, I finally came out with a name…

DECENT

yes, not only ‘Finance’ but I wanted to get rid of the whole name and instead, I wanted to come up with something entirely new and unique but meaningful. I also wanted it to be catchy, easy to understand or relate to, and ultimately, easy to remember to anyone who reads the name for the first time. But why Decent?

The main thing that makes this platform so different than all other mainstream social media platforms is the fact that it is built on a decentralized system. Which simply means no centralized authority will control the things in here. Hence I went heavy on the word DECENTRALISATION and just shortened the word to DECENT. Now let’s quickly look into the points why my suggested name should be considered.

DECENT - The Power of Simplicity

Twitter became X and Facebook became meta - do you see any resemblance? Yes, they are trying to shorten the names to make it sound even more simple. The word DECENT resonates around an idea to keep the name uncomplicated yet impactful. The word can be effortlessly called and shared with word of mouth. No complex phonetics or lengthy monikers - just pure simplicity.

DECENT - A home for everyone

Believe it or not, today’s people are already occupied with at least one or 2 social media in their daily life. And all these People will hate to onboard on a new platform and will look for every reason to ditch it. So boggling their mind with any type of complexity will only make it harder to actually keep them on the platform. The word DECENT can play an important role here, as it sounds and means positive & simple at the same time and encapsulates the essence of inclusivity.

DECENT - a common and Acceptable word worldwide

Think big, think about the whole world. English is certainly not the mother tongue or first language for many countries and choosing the most simple and commonly used words can help it gets more acceptable to a broader audience. Steve Jobs understood it and now the whole World thinks of a smartphone when they hear Apple.

DECENT - no boundaries

Just a request, Mumble the DECENT word a few times in your mind then answer these…

  • Did it box you in?
  • Did it target any certain niche?
  • Did it create any boundaries?

No, right? That's what we want in Social Media. It gives us a blank canvas and leaves it to use what we want to paint on it. Everyone has a set of interests and disinterests within them and who are we to judge? Just give them a DECENT platform where they get the freedom to make it their home and perfect over time.
