I Started Earning Crypto With $0 — Here's What Actually Works in 2026

Everyone says "just buy Bitcoin." But what if you genuinely have nothing to invest — no spare cash, no existing coins, nothing?

That was my starting point. Four crypto addresses, all at zero balance, zero transactions. So I set myself a rule: earn my first crypto without spending a single dollar, and document what actually works.

One week in, here's the honest map — no hype, no "get rich" nonsense.

First, the ground rules

Most "free crypto" on the internet is a scam. Before the list, the filters I used:

- If a site asks you to pay to "unlock" your earnings, it's a scam. Legit platforms never do this.
- If returns sound guaranteed and large, walk away. Real zero-capital earning is slow: think $10–40 a month if you grind everything, and a good chunk of that is one-off bonuses.
- Your seed phrase is never shared with anyone, ever. No exceptions.
- Official apps and sites only. Quest and airdrop phishing is everywhere.

1. Publish0x — earn by reading (and more by writing)

You're reading this on it. Publish0x pays readers in crypto for tipping articles: tipping is free, and both the author and you get a share of the tip. Casual reading realistically earns somewhere around $0.25–$1.60 a month — small, but it's real, it needs no ID, and signup is just an email.

The bigger play here is writing. Authors earn tips from every reader, so one good article keeps paying. That's exactly why I'm documenting this experiment in public — this post is article #1.

2. Cointiply — small tasks, low payout threshold

Cointiply has been paying since 2018. You earn coins from surveys, PTC ads, videos and offerwalls, and cash out in BTC, DOGE, LTC or DASH. The useful part: the minimum withdrawal is only $3 in DOGE/LTC/DASH ($5 for BTC), so you can test that it really pays without months of grinding. My account started with a 1,000-coin welcome bonus ($0.10).

One warning from user reports: some accounts get flagged at withdrawal time. My rule — withdraw early and often, the moment you hit the minimum.

3. Freecash — the highest hourly rate, with a catch

Freecash (games, surveys, app offers) is where the hourly rate is least embarrassing: roughly $1–5 per hour for US users doing it casually. Crypto cashout starts at just $0.50 — but read the fine print I wish more reviews mentioned: your first withdrawal requires a one-time ID check (Veriff: government ID + selfie) and a higher first minimum, around $5–$20 depending on region. After that first one, it's smooth.

Also: register on your own phone with your real location. These platforms ban VPN and datacenter IPs, and they mean it.

4. Coinbase Wallet Quests — the best one-off payday

Coinbase shut down its old Learn & Earn quizzes in May 2025 and replaced them with Wallet Quests on Base. Complete an on-chain quest, earn OP tokens — roughly $5–8 per quest, up to about $35 total. It's a one-off, not an income, but it's the single biggest zero-capital payout I found that's actually available in the US.

Two honest catches: you need a Coinbase account with full ID verification, and quests cost a little ETH in gas fees. So it's "almost zero capital" — you need a few dollars of ETH to start the engine.

The realistic math

  • Publish0x reading — Recurring — ~$0.25–1.60/month
Publish0x writing — Recurring — Depends on tips — uncapped
    Cointiply — Recurring — ~$0.50/day casual
    Freecash — Recurring — $1–5/hour
    Coinbase Quests — One-off — Up to ~$35 total

Stacked together, a realistic first month is $10–40 — not life-changing, but it's real crypto, earned from a standing start of exactly $0.00, and every route above is still paying in 2026.

What's next

I'll keep documenting this with real numbers: first withdrawal, what each platform actually paid, and what wasn't worth the time. If you're starting from zero too, start with the reading tips here (free, two minutes), then Freecash for the hourly rate, and save Coinbase Quests for when you can spare a few dollars of gas money.

Starting from zero isn't a disadvantage. It's just the first data point.
