Microsoft has a plan to revolutionize data ownership

Society is becoming increasingly reliant on data, especially with the advent of AI. However, a small handful of organizations with both massive data assets and AI capabilities attained worrying levels of control which is a danger to a free and open society.

How they do it ?

  • When the data owner publishes an asset, they publish the price in OCEAN.

The simplest way to price data is with a fixed price which is supported out-of-the-box. But you can use royalties, bonding curves, and more. It’s really up to the marketplace owner.

  • Only when the price is paid is the data asset made available to the consumer, by decrypting the file URL for downloading. This works for Compute-to-data too: only consumers paying that price can start a compute job on the asset.

  • Ocean Protocol’s metadata standards guarantee a unified base to find assets across marketplaces. Every Ocean Protocol marketplace stores metadata about every data set. In fact, marketplaces don’t have the data sets themselves, they just have the metadata.

With Ocean software components, connected to the decentralized Ocean data sharing network; data providers can monetize data while preserving privacy and control; data consumers can access data that they couldn’t get before: private data.

Who are their major stackeholders ?

Ocean protocol mission is to deliver data to AI. They are already partnering with Roche Diagnostics, Unilever and more. the mission of this partnership is to deploy more value to costumers. (In the picture there is a small list of their Enterprise partners.)

But that's not everything! Ocean fundation is also working to integrate already affirmed blockchain projects like Chainlink or Energy Web.

Who they are ?

Ocean Protocol is governed by a Singapore based non-profit foundation, whose mandate is to ensure open access to the protocol and platform, provide data governance, encourage the network ecosystem growth, and take measures to ensure that the platform becomes ever more decentralized with time.

The Ocean Protocol Foundation has contracted BigchainDB to build the core protocol, network, marketing, and community activities.

Now the interesting part: who is BigchainDB ?

BigchainDB allows developers and enterprise to deploy blockchain proof-of-concepts, platforms and applications with a blockchain database, supporting a wide range of industries and use cases.

Their partner list is very interesting and involve very big names like: Microsoft, Polkadot, Porsche, Toyota and Wolksvagen.

Is clear that there are quite interesting connections with ocean protocol; a deep research on this project is time well spend.

If you are a developer they also have a bounty program; you can find more on their website https://oceanprotocol.com/developers
