Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, a private army fighting for Russia in Ukraine, claimed that his forces had taken the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut and planned to hand it over to Russian regular army troops by June 1. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied these claims, stating that Bakhmut was not in Russian hands. Prigozhin has a history of making grand declarations, and Russia's forces in Ukraine face challenges and lack the resources to advance further. The dysfunction within the command structure of Russian forces in Ukraine continues to escalate as Ukraine prepares for a counteroffensive.

The progressive Move Forward Party (MFP) and other Thai opposition forces signed a pact outlining their goals as a future coalition government, which includes rewriting the constitution, breaking up business monopolies, and legalizing same-sex marriage. However, the MFP omitted to reform Thailand's lèse-majesté laws, which criminalized criticism of the monarchy. This move aims to win the support of Bhumjaithai, a royalist party crucial for forming a government without army support. However, it is seen as a disappointment to young voters who supported the MFP because of its commitment to reforming the royal defamation laws.

Afghans continue to leave the country in large numbers due to Taliban rule. Many have shifted their focus from trying to reach Europe to seeking asylum in the United States. Afghans typically fly to Brazil, which offers humanitarian visas, and then travel through countries like Panama, Colombia, Nicaragua, and the dangerous Darien Gap to reach Mexico. Despite the risks and challenges, more Afghans are taking this route, significantly increasing since the start of 2022. However, those who make it to the US border still face difficulties in resettlement, and the Biden administration's policy of humanitarian parole has seen a limited number of approvals

The G7 summit in Hiroshima demonstrated alignment among the group on Russia and progress toward consensus on China. However, dysfunctional US politics remains a significant challenge to America's global strength, hindering its ability to address global issues effectively.

In addition to these critical events, other notable developments include the European Union (EU) fining Meta (formerly Facebook) $1.3 billion for privacy violations and ordering the company to stop keeping European users' data on US servers.

Nigeria has opened its Dangote oil refinery, positioning itself to become a major exporter of refined fuels, which could reshape Atlantic gasoline markets.

Despite a seven-day ceasefire in Sudan's civil war, air strikes and clashes continued in Khartoum.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed readiness to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan's territory if the rights of the ethnic Armenian majority are guaranteed.
