Researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have published a paper where in they explain how they are able to create a Stablecoin, or as they call it an E-Stablecoin, that is pegged to electricity.
What they are claiming
In short, what they are claiming is that a person with the right equipment is able to either use this to generate electricity and waste data. Or they can delete waste data by putting energy in the system. The kicker here is that non of the persons have to be connected to the grid. So you technically have no reason to involve a power company. Both parties can be completely off the grid.
This is done by converting heat entropy into power, but to balance the system you then generate waste data or information entropy. Keeping the total entropy in the local system intact. This information entropy can then be transferred and removed somewhere else.
What effects will this have on the future?
I can see this technology if it can be made to work practically, having a huge impact on the global electric market. You could virtually eradicate any price difference that could occur locally. And you would be able to move a large quantity of electricity without the need for infrastructure, to some extent at least. There are probably some scaling limitations to the system.
This would also enable people who want to live off the grid the ability to do so without having to invest, upfront, in their own power generation. They can instead use this solution, which is hopefully much cheaper to get up and running. And then they can add on their own power production at a later stage. And it would also possibly eliminate the need for batteries, at least to some extent, as the energy produced could be stored in the E-Stablecoin directly and the coins could then later be used when you have the need.

This might be a thing of the past if this new tech pans out
The same solution could also be used for renewable energy production. There has been the problem for the longest been the ability to store the energy produced so you can use it later when you need it. This could take care of that problem.
So this has some real upside to it if they can make it work practically. I have spent the last hour trying to wrap my head around the publication. But I have only been able to grasp the miner basics of it. And I am not able to say whether it can work or not. But I have included the link to the paper down below, in case you want to check it out.
