It was early Sunday morning, and my roommate’s family—still thawing out from the previous night’s wedding celebration—was just waking up. They were using my bedroom for a bit of extra space, something I had offered up freely since I planned to be away for the weekend. No big deal. Or at least, that’s how I saw it.
But as I messaged my roommate letting him know I might be back earlier than expected, something in his response stuck with me. He thanked me for the space, then added, “I don't know what forces drive you to be the most altruistic person on earth, but thank you.”
It made me pause.
Because to me, this wasn't a grand gesture. It was simply what felt right—an opportunity to make someone else's life a little easier. And maybe that’s the quiet beauty of giving: it doesn’t always feel heroic or world-changing in the moment. It feels natural. Generous. Human.
