As many of you who have followed my blogging know my last internship ended May 31st however due to Memorial Day my last official day in the office was May 28th. Working on The Hill has already taught me so much and especially with how crazy it had been since I moved up here I needed a break from it all. Naturally though when I left I spent many many hours those first few days answering calls from the new interns about how to do different things.
When it ended everyone's question was what are you going to do now and honestly I did not have a clue. It wasn't until June 1st that my furniture arrived to my new apartment and I could really finally fully move in. Working on The Hill under the circumstances that have been going on and only now are starting to get better made the transition from home, Texas where most of my friends lived, to here in Washington DC, where I was lucky enough to have a couple long time friends about 45 minutes away in Virginia by me just that much harder. I was really burned out while other people in the office took days off I only did one time but really it wasn't my choice. I had gotten the COIVD 19 second vaccine dose the day before and since I was the only intern I tried to push through it but only made it 15 minutes before I started to feel dangerously sick.
One thing I have learned through everything I have gone through in life is that I can always bet on myself to figure it out when I am backed against a wall and I was putting myself in that position by wanting to take a week or so off before looking. Amazingly I actually never had to do a thing as the Scheduler from my previous office had a friend in another Texas Congressional Office who needed an intern. He sent me an email asking if it was okay to forward my resume along and as soon as I did he sent it. The next day I had a phone interview set up for two days later, last Thursday, and this past Monday was informed I had another paid internship that started in a week, June 14th.
This office is going to be pretty different then the last one I was in and the biggest reason for that is my first internship I was working in a freshman. congressman's office and now I am working in one of the most senior Republican offices in the House of Representatives. It is a pretty big jump but it is one that I feel I am ready for. I really learned that I thrived in an office environment which is something I never would have imagined saying to myself even 8 months ago. Further I have been able to really figure out some really unique skills I learned in college with all the research I did that really come in handy up here.
With the way that The Hill functions this should be the final internship I have to pull. After this one I will have had 8 months in Congressional Offices and if it works out even half as well as the first one worked out I could really leave my mark on legislation that is put up for debate and talked about. The connections I will be able to make now that I am back on The Hill again with everything opening up bode really well for my network of contacts to continue to grow and help me land the next job and climb the latter. It is a little bit scary though as this is the first job up here this far away from family and friends that I have to build all of the initial relationships within the office but I have been told many times before that that is something I am rather good at doing.
Rumor has it to that tours are going to start up again soon and I really cannot wait to guide people through the Capital Building. One thing I quickly learned was no matter how many times you walk through it every time you do you will find something new to catch your eye. The history in the building is so vivid and alive and it is time the public be able to see it themselves again. I know the intern tasks are going to be.... well unpleasant to say the least but the connections and knowledge you gain are immeasurable. Also since the internship at least has some pay associated with it I will have some money and I wont have to continue to pull from my own savings and investments. Its going to be a wild ride and I cant wait to be able to tell you all more about it once I am in the thick of things again!
