Apple Cinnamon Crumble Dessert

Just In Time For The Holidays: Apple Cinnamon Crumble

This is my first recipe post in a few months. I'm sure you'll agree, it was worth the wait.

One of the easiest desserts anyone can make is an apple crumble. It can be enjoyed fresh and warm out of the oven or let it cool off in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Whether hot or cold, this delicious treat can be served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream after the big meal. Can also be served as a breakfast dessert with your morning coffee.

Hmmm, waking up on Christmas morning, making a fresh pot of coffee and serving some apple cinnamon crumble as a breakfast dessert sure sounds yummy!

Let's get started, shall we?  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. You'll need a 4 inch by 9 inch pan or similar.

First we'll prepare the crumble topping, followed by the apple filling.

Topping Ingredients:

1 cup rolled oats

1 cup white flour

1 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup melted butter

Mix the ingredients together and then add the butter last. You should end up with light clumping as shown in the photo below. Cover and let sit while you prepare the filling.

Apple Filling:

4 large apples, peeled and chopped - Granny Smith apples are the best but any sweet apple will do.

1 tablespoon white flour

1 cup white sugar

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Apples

Once you've chopped all your apples into small pieces, add the filling ingredients and gently mix with a spoon for just a minute or two and should look like the photo below.

Wasn't that easy? Now we're ready to place the apple cinnamon filling into the pan.

Gently spread the topping evenly over the filling.  It should end up even with the top of the pan as shown in the photo below.

Place the pan in the over and let bake for 30 to 40 minutes.  It should darken a bit. Compare between the photo above and the ones below.

That's it. You and your guests are ready to enjoy the most delicious apple cinnamon crumble and just in time for the holidays!

Note: The original recipe called for a lot more sugar. I was able to reduce the amount of brown and white sugar by a full cup! If you wish, you can reduce the amount of sugar a little more to satisfy your taste buds (or add more if that's what you prefer).

My Mom, bless her heart, was an amazing baker. I often stood by as a child and watched as she prepared all the ingredients for pies, cakes, cookies and more. Her desserts were phenomenal. I'd like to share some of her recipes and my own as well. When the lockdowns came last year, I found myself baking like never before. I've tried apple pie, peach pound cake, strawberry rhubarb pound cake, cranberry muffins and chocolate chip cookies to name a few. I hope you enjoy my recipes.
