Splinterlands - Battle Library Eighteen - One life can make all the difference.

It's time for another battle library entry - this time one where one choice made all the difference.

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

In Battle Library Eighteen we look at a battle where two very similar teams went head to head.

The rules that applied to this battle were:

- Mana cap of 15 - A low cap match;

- Fire, Earth, Life or Death splinters only;

- Aim True - Ranged and Melee cannot miss;

Small cap battles are often challenging and make for quite limited team choices.  My opponent had often used Earth but often with a lot of melee so I decided to go with Thaddeus and Windreku as a good combo to mitigate this (minus one to enemy magic and as a bonus to life as well combined with  thorns from Windreku).

And so my line up was:

Summoner - Thaddius (4) - For the reduction in enemy magic and life;

Cursed Windreku (6) - Thorns baby thorns!;

Venari Bonesmith (4) - it was either the bonesmith or the life sapper - did I need another low mana card? Would the one mana I save by using Lifesapper mean I can bring a better/another monster into the game?  I decided the one life was more useful.;

Creeping Ooze (1) - for the slow ability and to fill up the cap and be a block to sneak;

Using 15 out of 15 this team mitigated magic attacks, would hurt melee teams and had a magic attack of its own. If Windreku survived a while and the bonesmith leeched enough life that would make it difficult for the opposition too.

Now, what did the opponent go with - an earth team - no he must have been thinking along the same lines as me as he went with a similar team.

The opponent had used life a number of times and did so again making this a mirror match in many respects.

Summoner - Thaddius (4) - For the reduction in enemy magic and life;

Cursed Windreku (6) - Thorns baby thorns!;

Life Sapper (3) - Unlike me my opponent decided to use the Life Sapper to save one mana for another card;

Agent of Chaos (1) - Looks like he is just here to fill in the team and maybe tank an opportunity shot to give the sapper time to build health;

Carrion Shade (1) - One attack, can tank an opportunity or sneak shot giving more time for the Life Sapper to build health;

This team used 15 out of the 15 cap and was a very similar approach to mine.  Will the the one life of the Venari Bonemith over the Life Sapper make all the difference?  Lets see....

Turn One - Thanks to the Ooze my team strikes first with Windreku and Bonesmith attacking his Windreku before his team returns fire. Both teams end the turn with Windrekus on three life each (due to the attacks and thorns).  My Bonesmith has three life, his Sapper two life due to leech.

Turn Two - Again I go first and while my Windreku and Bonesmith take out his Windreku the thorns damage I took meant the Sapper killed my Windreku. The Bonesmith now has four life, the Sapper three.

Turns three to twenty - With the two leech cards tossing magic attacks at each other but healing as well turns three to 20  go through with neither team managing to kill each other;

Turn 21 and 22 - Fatigue kicks in after turn 20. It kills off the Ooze, Shade and Agent the first time around and at the end of turn 21 leaves Bonesmith with three life, Sapper with two life.  In turn 22 neither the Bonesmith or Sapper can kill the other but fatigue kills the Sapper and the match ends with the Bonesmith on one life!  A close battle and a win for me.

What made the difference - two choices really made the difference - Bonesmith vs Sapper and a one life differential (which is why I won) and secondly choice of one mana cards to fill the team & their positioning.  If he had chosen Ooze (to even up the speed) and put the shade in front of the sapper there is a chance that his Carrion Shade could have gotten one hit on my Bonesmith and evened the match up so it ended in a draw.  However he did not choose the Ooze and he used the one mana cards to mitigate sneak resulting in a win for me!

And that about sums it up! Hope you enjoyed the battle and if you found it interesting and are not into Splinterlands yet give it a go:
