Journey towards Financial Freedom in A Third World Country : The New Vocabularies (Part 1)


After contemplating the regrets I had in the past. It's time to move on and start the journey towards the much coveted financial freedom.

One of the things that I did to prepare for my own journey is to learn about the terms that are used a lot in articles that are discussing about cryptocurrency, such as HODL, DCA, DYOR, ICO and all the other things. This post is my own interpretation about some of the terms that is commonly used in cryptocurrency articles that I would like to share to you incase you are just starting out like me.

As there is a LOT of the words/acronyms that is used, I will divide it into two parts so that this post is not too long.



ATH: All Time High; The highest position a cryptocurrency coin/token has ever been transacted at

ATL: All Time Low; The lowest position a cryptocurrency coin/token has ever been transacted at

Airdrop: A distribution of a cryptocurrency through a certain amount of people (usually free or by performing simple tasks), which is essentially a marketing campaign and usually happens when a cryptocurrency creator provides its coin to community members to build up their popularity.

Altcoins: alternatives to Bitcoin, which operates by its own rules. examples are Ethereum and Litecoin

Bear/Bearish: When the price of a cryptocurrency has a negative movement

Block: the main component of a blockchain, which essentially is a permanent record or a database of cryptocurrency transactions that can be viewed and or opened at any time

Blockchain: a digital ledger of all transactions ever made in a certain cryptocurrency. Every time a certain block in a blockchain is full, a new block is added to the chain.

Bull/Bullish: When the price of a cryptocurrency has a positive movement

Burn (Coin Burning): the process of permanently removing cryptocurrency from cicrulation to reduce the total supply. This is commonly used to make the price of said cryptocurrency to be deflationary (in the case of a fixed supply)

dApp (decentralized Application): digital applications or programs which exist and run on a blockchain, instead of a single computer, and are not controlled by a single authority

DCA: dollar cost averaging; investing a certain amount of money in a certain cryptocurrency every set amount of time (ex: every month/week/day you buy $10 worth of BTC). Usually done to average out the buying price to reduce risk of losing too much in case of a bearish market.

Dump: selling a lot (or all) of your cryptocurrency

Dumping: when a lot of people dump at once, the cryptocurrency price will have a sharp downward movement

DYOR: do you own research, it is always wise to do something after you know what you are dealing with, even more so in case of buying/selling cryptocurrency which have a very volatile price movement, and can be very stressful. It is okay to ask for advice, but you always need to your own research to make your own strategy.

Fiat: currency which have been declared to be legal tender and is backed by governments, such as US dollar, Euro, British pound.

FOMO: fear of missing out; feeling of urgency that you  will miss the run so you decide to buy at a high price

FUD: fear, uncertainty, and doubt; trick used to spread doubt and fear which would cause the price drop in a certain coin

Gas: measurement of computational power required to process a transaction in the Ethereum network

Hash: an attempt to find a block by creating a unique block candidate and testing it against the network

Hash Rate: measurement of performance on how many hashes per second your computer is able to produce

HODL: hold on for dear life; you hold (not sell) your coin even though the price is going down severely

ICO: initial coin offering; when a cryptocurrency creator put an initial batch of the coins up for purchase to raise funds

KYC: know your customer; an obligation in many countries in which a financial institution have to verify the identity of a customer, an example would be where you have to fill in certain information about yourself and scan your ID to open the next tier in several securities

Liquidity: how easily a certain cryptocurrency can be bought and sold without impacting the overall market price

MCAP (Market Capitalization): The total number of coins in supply multiplied by the price of one coin

Mining: process of verifying transactions on a blockchain

Miner: a certain individual who mines, usually with the purpose of receiving fractions of the cryptocurrency 

Node: any computer connected to a blockchain's network

Nonce: a random number generated when a miner hashes a transaction

NFT: non-fungible token: one of a kind digital asset that represents an object form the real world, which is sold and bought with cryptocurrencies on the blockchain
