Splinterlands: Own Your Cards Like You Never Thought Possible

By Chris Roberts | Splinterlands | 4 Jun 2020

Have you ever noticed that "trading cards" have never been that easy to trade?

At Splinterlands, we noticed. Not only are trading cards usually bent and slightly damaged right out of the pack, but in order to hold them as collectibles with value for any amount of time, you must treat the cards with all the sanctity of the Sacred Orbs kept by the Khymian monks.

With traditional trading cards, the more you trade, the more you risk. Every time those cards change hands they're subject to someone else's grime, someone else's finger oils and someone else's carelessness. Honestly, it was a brilliant tactic of big trading card to ensure scarcity, thus supporting long-term value, but as collectors, we're beginning to outgrow that design.

Blockchain and NFTs are Changing Everything

Splinterlands is a digital trading card game that plays by many of the normal rules of TCGs, but it also has a few new and unique ones that really set it apart. Splinterlands is powered by the HIVE blockchain, so all transactional data is tracked and kept forever. This means comfort and security for the players, who are able to transact as many times as they like for no gas costs on a no-need-for-trust system of trading.

Each card is a non-fungible token with its own "print run," circulating supply and free market. Like any free market, the value of each NFT (card) is determined by the players as they continuously make buy and sell orders on our active Monster Market. With extremely quick and free transactions, the HIVE blockchain is ideal for a powerhouse like Splinterlands.

Scarcity of Splinterlands cards is guided in two main ways. First, the only way to level up your cards to compete at higher levels is to combine them. A common card from the Untamed Series, for example, takes 400 single cards combined to reach the max Monster level of 10. The second reason that cards always become more scarce is that any card can be "burned" for Dark Energy Crystals, one of the in-game currencies of the Splinterlands. Burning a card for Dark Energy Crystals is often a quicker and easier option than listing it on the market, especially since Booster Packs and Potions can be purchased for Dark Energy Crystals.

Rewards With Splinterlands

Splinterlands is more than a game. It is an economy of rewards.

DAILY QUESTS

Each day, players can battle toward a Daily Quest that once completed, earns them loot chests. Loot chests can contain cards, potion charges (increasing rarity of card drops), or Essence Orbs, limited edition Boosters. More loot chests are earned based on the player's ranking and level of play.

SEASON REWARDS

When each 15-day season ends, huge piles of loot chests are rewarded to all active players. Those who have achieved the higher Champion Leagues can earn over 100 loot chests, and even the lowest-level active players can earn 10 or more. The top fifty players of each season also take home an additional (and substantial) Booster Pack prize.

SHARING/CREATING

Because of the way tokens are generated on the HIVE blockchain, you can be rewarded for creating literally anything about Splinterlands... or anything about anything. This has been Splinterlands' secret to having such an active community of brilliant creativity. Rewards beget rewards. Learn more at Peakd.com.

HOLD AND WAIT

Because Splinterlands cards are provably-owned NFT assets, you can just sit on them knowing that the development team is making great strides and growing the game. If you don't feel like playing, you can even lease your cards out to others on Peakmonsters for some residual income.
