So before I was obsessed with Splinterlands, as a kid, I played a ton of tabletop roleplaying games. It really helped me build a vivid imagination and I was a spooky kid who loved monsters. I don't remember the first time I encountered a Gelatinous Cube across a dungeon tile but, to me, they have always been one of the single most iconic monsters in all of Dungeons and Dragons.

The idea on a monstrous cube of jelly that envelops you before breaking down and digesting you is both so humorous and so horrific. You can bet that if I'm designing a dungeon it's going to have a cube, jelly, or other ooze creature present. So watch for that!
Another thing I love in gaming is top-down design. For those who have not heard the term in reference to game design this means that a design was created to express or translate a specific idea into the game. These designs are often really unique but can be complicated to balance.
One of my favorite examples of a design like this is the card Jar of Eyeballs from Magic the Gathering.

I've wrote in the past about how I think Kron the Undying is an amazing design for a card that can feel like an unkillable god in one situation but also not be so powerful you wont see it lose in other line-ups. One of the other cards I think is nearly just as great a design in Splinterlands is the subject of this post: Gelatinous Cube.

Simply put: The Cube stands alone. If you are a new player starting off in Splinterlands you're really going to want to pick one up for how effective it is in any Rule Set that causes extra damage. Do you want to see what can happen when a Cube is just left alone in the middle of a fierce battle set in one of these rulesets?

What starts looking like a fairly simple standup battle quickly turns into an absolute cluster due to the entire battlefield being poisoned AND being granted divine shields.
Put simply, my whole team is awesome. First, going into this battle I was confident there was a chance my team could win the battle on it's own power, this is really important even when also playing a side strategy. My side strategy here is using the Cube to just outlast everyone else. When a Cube finds itself on a battlefield where 6-7 monsters have died it can become too big to kill.

This is the hidden core of this team though and a lot of people might miss why. While my team is extremely survivable if it's going to win the battle we're going to need to outlast our opponents and leverage the damage added by the poison. Between Dwarven Wizard and Medusa I have two monsters who can stun enemy creatures and lock them down until the end of the round. Not only that but, because the Wizard has snipe, they'll often be targeting different monsters. Powerful!
Let's see how it goes for me!
Right from the first round my knockout artists are doing their job well and, by the end of the battle, my Cube looked like this.

Not bad! Not bad at all!
Some of you might remember that in my last post I hid a giveaway for me Cube in the article. There were plenty of people who entered the contest but the winner ended up being...
