The spot I was standing at was completely underwater during some late 2000s storms. Friends that lived in the area at the time said it rained for a week straight and rivers like the one in the picture had enormous volume flowing through them during this period. The guide explains all of this compared the volume to what Niagara falls sees.
The only signs that there was an old bridge here are the old support mounts where the old bridge was connected to the foundation. Since then they raised it a few feet so the bridge does not get washed away again. The bridge itself, can barely be seen. Its those two beams seen in the water is all that remains. The bridge is covered by many feet of silt, and at this point cannot be removed without great effort. So it was decided to let the remains stay in the water.
The guide was saying this flood is like a one in ten thousand year flood, meaning it only occurs on such volume every ten thousand years or so. So eventhough it could happen again, it probably wont flood to such an extent in my life time.
Seeing this and hearing the experience of people dealing with heavy rain for many days on end makes me warey of living on rivers or any flowing bodies of water. As it shows, this bridge was washed away. Any home near the river would have been too, chances are.. I would only have a home a few hundred feet into the land.

I found this writing funny. Guess its a couple that are talking about how they met. And yeah I feel ya, its hot in ATL.. hah
Further down the river, turtles were sunning and seem quite happy. I was told they are soft shell turtles.
Further down the river it really opens up and the size can be appreciated. The green color is added by the trees lining the water, making it look much more green than it really is.
