Infrared Photography - The new bridge across the water

By Solominer | Solominer | 10 Jun 2019

Back in 2009, there was a once in ten thousand year flood in the South East. The amount of water that flowed down this river at the time was close to what Niagara falls sees during that severe flood. Well the bridge that was across the water at Sweetwater Creek State Park washed away, and a new bridge had to be built.

A bonus feature in this photo is the jet flying high over in the sky. I did not notice it until I was writing my posts about it.

You can still see the old bridge though, well parts of it when the water is low enough. Those two beams out in the river are parts of the old bridge that could not be recovered. During the flooding the old bridge was buried under tens of feet of mud and silt.

The Army core of engineers could not remove the old bridge so its been left in the water, and is a reminder of how floods can wash away what we thought was safe, the new bridge was built higher up to avoid such flood distastes in the future.

The did not get to see the old bridge before it was brought down by floods, but the new bridge looks pretty nice. And had fun taking pictures and hearing the history of the old bridge. I had friends in the area when this happened, they said it rained for one week straight and the rivers over flowed. Luckily I have not had to deal with such distastes yet.

While standing under the newly constructed bridge, there was some writing on the concrete, it says.

"We met in Msp
Were it was cold now
..Live in ATL where it is hot."

Sounds like some transplants moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota where it is quite cold. Now they live in Atlanta, where it is hot.. Sure does!

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with UV light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.
