Like many of you, I have spent A LOT more time at home in the last year. COVID-19 has cost me more than one job and seriously destabilized my life, finances, and plans for the future. Yet I am still incredibly lucky. This is now my 3rd time isolating at home due to potential COVID exposure at work but I have not experienced any symptoms nor have I ever tested positive. This is a stressful experience, but becoming all too routine for many workers. I count myself lucky, I have made it this far without getting sick or losing a close loved one. I have dedicated time, money, and my skills this year to try to help those struggling right now. At times when I have to tighten the belt in my own home, I still have a desire to help my community and organize.

I found myself remembering a political action I witnessed and participated in back in ‘14 in LA. At the time, UberEats and CashApp were aggressively promoting in LA and elsewhere. UberEats would give something like a $25 sign up bonus and $25 to whoever referred while CashApp gave $10 to new sign ups and $10 for each user referred by an account. Some clever organizers took notice of the potential of the sign up rewards and referral programs for exploitation. I encountered a canvasser on a street corner giving his sales pitch and passing out QR code fliers. The organizers used their UberEats accounts to send large catered meals to local homeless shelters and eventually donated over $1,000 raised from CashApp referrals to various mutual aide groups in the community. Compared to the hauls large national campaigns can raise, it's not much, but to small actions just getting started, it's seed investment that could one day bloom into a great asset for your neighborhood. To be clear, I was not an organizer involved in this, just a participant who signed up and admired what they did. I wish I could take credit but I don’t know who the original idea started with.

I want to give direct action and local politcal groups a tool to micro-fundraise. Done properly, I believe a motivated group could raise a significant amount of money that could then be distributed to various other groups or projects, or simply saved until the funds might be needed.
