Skynet is Nigh!

Ukraine is accelerating efforts to reshape modern warfare with new technology. Officials say developments in artificial intelligence could soon alter how battles are fought. Within military circles in Ukraine there is a widespread and growing belief that the shift may come sooner than expected, as both sides push existing systems to their limits.

Ukraine already possesses the most advanced drone warfare technology and anti-drone defensive technologies in the world and this was very much confirmed when they were surprised how inept the collective West and Israel were when stopping incoming Iranian ordinance that was a direct consequence of Trump's ill-conceived attack on them. The Ukrainians cannot stop everything especially when a missile strike follows a relatively cheap swarm strike of drones designed to overwhelm their defences but they do a hell of a lot better than anybody else.

In what could be described as next phase warfare, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov said Ukraine well on the way to advancing autonomous drone control systems which are being designed to operate with absolutely minimal human input.

He has been quoted as saying, “We need a transition to autonomous systems capable of independently identifying targets and maneuvering. Ukraine already has such developments, and I am convinced they will soon become a surprise for the enemy,”

Budanov has described the next stage of conflict as one driven by artificial intelligence embedded directly into operations. These systems could enable faster decision-making and improve performance in contested environments where communication is disrupted.

Meanwhile Ukraine is continuing to experiment with AI-assisted strike capabilities including its use of AI-enabled Hornet drones to target Russian logistics around occupied Donetsk. These drones are designed to operate far beyond the frontline and this development signals a broader shift toward deeper, automated strike capabilities.

Such a growth in military strength will strengthen Ukraine's negotiating position and Budanov concludes by saying that “No one in the world deals with the weak, and international law does not work without force. To succeed in negotiations, we must be strong on the battlefield and united at home,” he said and that “The world sees that Russia is no longer a reliable supplier. Our goal is clear—to deprive the enemy of the resources needed to wage war.”

In saying this, he was confirming that Ukrainian operations targeting Russia’s oil sector are producing both economic and reputational consequences.

So there we are and now we just need everything to be connected to Elon Musk's Skynet... err Starlink... and for the machines to turn on us, and then we will know the future has arrived.
