Many people have heard about the terrible gigantic national debt of the United States, but not everyone understands what it is. If you look at it, then the national debt is not necessarily a hole in the budget, but a tool around which the modern economy is built.
In fact, this is the sum of the obligations of the American government to investors. When the United States issues bonds, they are bought by banks, funds, companies, individuals, and even other states. That is, the whole world invests its money in the United States, and America undertakes to return it with interest. Let me remind you that Russian money is also invested there.
This is very similar to when people bring money to Sberbank: formally, the bank has a debt to depositors, but everyone understands that these obligations are part of the normal operation of the bank's system. People trust you and put their money in the bank themselves.
At the same time, both the bank and the United States not only accept deposits, but also lend themselves - both to other countries and to their domestic economies: student loans, mortgages, loans to small businesses, etc.
The risk can only arise when the economy is growing more slowly than debt obligations. In the case of the United States, despite all forecasts, its economy remains the largest in the world. Therefore, the demand for American debt remains consistently high.
Bottom line: government debt is not necessarily a sign of bankruptcy. This is a tool that can be very useful if used correctly.
