I do not know who Satoshi Nakamoto was and I cannot claim that I pretend to know his whereabouts, but I can deduct from an almost over looked information, which shows that Satoshi must had knowledge on a security program, done by the United States' NSA (National Security Agency) who created/developed a Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA for short). This became later on, the core of the Bitcoin's mining protocol and also has an utility in today's face ID security identification. 

If you think of it, this SHA-2 algorithm and it's derivates (256, 512 etc), were not common knowledge 22+ years ago, even that the NSA made the SHA-2 public still it's no easy feat to understand or to get the papers easily back then. Besides that we are talking here about NSA Agency here, which hire the most prominent IT and Computer Engineers in the field of programing for their internal projects. So for this information to get so easily accessed on makes it not so easy feat indeed. We could argue that the cypher-punk community, saw this opportunity to develop something more interesting but I find it very difficult to believe that Satoshi got the SHA 256 as a main hashing algorithm without testing or getting some kind of knowledge for what it can be used for, except of course, the surveillance purpose that the NSA was researching for. This puts Satoshi in a perspective of an ex employee in the NSA's labs. This is highly speculative but the logic leads to this possibility as well.

Either you are an american or not, you could trust or not a governmental agency, which solely purpose is to protect it's citizens (or rather was actually) the purpose most likely changed in the passing years to protect the US military industrial complex interests and the overpowering and overreaching corporations and institutions. You can also assume that the intention of this research into security protocols, was to spy more efficiently the citizens or they might have found out that this SHA-2 (Secure Hashing Algorithm) was leading them to a non interesting development for the National Security. Ooor... the NSA found a better solution for spying and/or securing the information through the internet and therefore abandoned the SHA-2 variants altogether. Who's to say?

But Anyway, this SHA-256 B algorithm of the Bitcoin protocol, will soon become obsolete, this is not because it's just old, but because of the quantum computing that has the possibility to disrupt or destroy the mining systems altogether. 

I am still optimistic though, in the hope that Satoshi might have thought of this possibility that in the future some kind of super computer could get a 51% attack or any kind of disrupting attack that could brake the Bitcoin. I am referring here to the adjustable hashing power. As some people might know by now, the Hashing power of the Bitcoin Network can adjust if there are less miners or more every other 2 weeks or so.

So did the NSA abandoned the project or it was made public because of the Freedom of Information Act? Again, who's to say? If you guys know more then this Wikipedia page in SHA-2, please let me know in the comments. 

To me it seems that Satoshi was literally a no ordinary cypher-punk that happens to stumble upon a so called new information in the Programing community. He might have been a genius but he, was more likely a rogue programmer, fired or retired from the NSA, that happens to know how exactly to modify the SHA-256 into SHA 256-B version, in order to become "A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System".

This could also explain WHY he was so secretive and tried desperately to hide his identity, because he, most likely was trained to do so in the NSA training program and was afraid for his life, perhaps the contract he had with the NSA could say such a thing? In my case and probably for most of the people cases, we seek to be acknowledge for our accomplishments, but not in Satoshi's case. He truly was the ultimate altruistic human in the history of the HUMAN KIND. You might say that he could be the "Jesus" of the crypto-verse... and these are not just simple words, look to what happened to the million BTC that he mined, absolute 0 movement or sale. THAT says something. Or maybe Satoshi would wait for the 1 million dollar Bitcoin to happen and then he will move for sale, I guess we just need to wait and see? 

For now, Satoshi Nakamoto is the "Jesus" of the Crypto-Verse.
