In territorial terms Terras de Bouro is the largest municipality in the territory of Cávado, has an area of 276.2 km², of which 52% (143 km2) are protected area (Peneda Gerês National Park-PNPG), occupied by a population of 8,350 inhabitants (2001) which gives it the lowest population density in this area (30 inhabitants / km2). The county consists of 17 parishes.

It is a municipality in which the natural heritage assumes a prominent place in its potential, conferred by the presence of part of the area of the only national park in the country (PNPG). The natural environment is composed of a great diversity and quality of flora and fauna including the presence of some endemic species.

In terms of built heritage, it's made up of some national monuments, such as the 35 milestones of the former Geira Romana and the cruise of Mrs. do Campo do Gerês, as well as the monuments of public interest of the Archaeological Station of Chelo, Marco Miliary of Covide / Campo do Gerês, the ruins of Chalcedon and the grave / grave of the Frade.
