Travel Portugal - Valongo ecological corridor #1

By portugal | portugal | 21 Mar 2020

The city of Valongo, which is about 11km from Porto in Portugal, is the city where I live. Fortunately in this small town I have the great privilege of having a lot of nature and very good access. I live in the city center, but on saturday mornings I always take the opportunity to go for a walk or run on this ecological corridor.

The ecological corridor of Valongo is an essentially pedestrian path through which people are a large green patch over river systems important and structuring aspects of the landscape, Ribeira, Rio Simão and the River Ferreira.

This route, with an approximate length of 9km, connects it, passing through the city park and the village of Couce, distinguishing two sections: the urban and the forest.

The pedestrian route in urban areas has an extension approximately 2km following Ribeira Simão, a fundamental ecological area within the city. This route, besides connecting two green spaces with an important social character -youth park and city park, it also fits an important historical and cultural legacy.

The pedestrian path in the forest includes two aspects: the rural, passing through agricultural areas that practically delimit the transition between the urban and the forest space.

This 7km road runs through Valongo along the Simão River and the Ferreira River, connecting the Serra de Santa Justa and the Pias Mountains, allowing the enhancement of agricultural and forest areas, reinforcing its ecological and landscape value and promoting contact with different natural aspects, namely geological, fauna and floristic.

These paths were all recovered, rural and forest paths to the detriment of the opening of new routes, respecting the terrain morphology and path configuration existing. In some cases, walkways to cross small water lines.

In the next post I will continue to write about this Valongo trail.

I hope you enjoyed this new trip!!!
