Sinopsis/Synopsis:

American Migrant es el título de una PELÍCULA DE CARRETERA ÉPICA DE ARTE, que sigue a un cantante de Rock & Roll y a sus amigos compositores de Texas a través de México mientras recorren con sus guitarras los bares de Tenochtitlan, las calles de Monterrey y todo el desierto primitivo que hay entre ellos.

Será épica, como un Lawrence de Arabia punk-rock, un western de Kevin Costner bañado en cuero o las primeras escenas de No Country For Old Men, que se extienden en su vastedad desértica mexicana en alta definición.  El Dr. Zhivago, hablando español gringo bajo el sol. Pero también tendrá un aire de cine de arte, como una película cruda hecha por gente de baja fidelidad de Nueva York.  El Bueno, El Malo, y El Feo, para músicos.

¿Podrán nuestros agotados héroes viajar más allá del nido de pájaros hecho de alambre de púas?  ¿Podrán atravesar los narcobloqueos y los puestos de control policiales soviético-aztecas y adentrarse en los áridos cielos de cactus?  ¿Podrán sobornar para abrirse paso a través de los fantasmas narco de México?

¿O consumirán el polvo de escorpiones y ladrones?

American Migrant is the title of an EPIC ARTHOUSE ROAD MOVIE, charting a Rock & Roll singer and his songwriter friends from Texas across Mexico as they guitar-bomb the bars of Tenochtitlan, the streets of Monterrey, and all the primal desert in between.

It will be epic, like a punk-rock Lawrence of Arabia, a Kevin Costner Western dipped in leather, or the first scenes of No Country For Old Men, sweeping in its hi-def, Mexican desert vastness.  Dr. Zhivago, speaking gringo Spanish in the sun.  But it will also have an arthouse vibe, like a gritty film made by lo-fi people from New York.  The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, for musicians.

Will our frazzled heroes travel beyond the bird's nest of barbed wire?  Will they make it through the narcobloqueos and the Soviet-Aztec police checkpoints, and into the arid cactus heavens?  Will they bribe their way through the narco ghosts of Mexico?

Or will they consume the dust of scorpions and thieves?

Configuración/Setting:

El escenario principal será la carretera y numerosas ciudades y pueblos de México y Texas.  Denver se reunirán con Nathan en un aeropuerto aún por determinar en México y viajarán por todo el país en una camioneta Ford Econoline de 1999 con un equipo mínimo.  Desde la Ciudad de México hasta Monterrey, desde Oaxaca hasta Ft. Worth, conocerán a muchas personas diferentes de diferentes ámbitos de la vida, desde gente de la calle y gente de bares, personalidades profesionales de los medios de comunicación, mariachis y todo lo demás.

El pueblo de Paracho en el estado de Michoacán es famoso por sus fabricantes de guitarras y planeamos visitarlo para hacernos amigos de al menos un luthier local y comprar sus guitarras para usarlas en las presentaciones durante el viaje.

La Plaza Garibaldi en la Ciudad de México es conocida como un lugar de reunión para grupos de mariachis, y les enseñaremos una canción o dos en la acera, que interpretaremos con ellos en la calle.

Después de viajar a través de México, cruzaremos la frontera en Laredo, Texas, y realizaremos al menos un espectáculo en Texas (San Antonio y/o Austin), de camino a un espectáculo de regreso a casa en el área de DFW.  Extractos del espectáculo de regreso a casa proporcionarán las escenas finales de la película.

Los créditos finales se reproducirán sobre imágenes de los protagonistas pasando el rato en la tumba de Townes Van Zandt, tal vez leyendo la Biblia o fumando marihuana.  Tal vez ambas cosas.

The main setting will be the road, and numerous towns and cities in Mexico and Texas.  Denver will meet Nathan at a yet-to-be-determined airport in Mexico, and will travel around the country in a 1999 Ford Econoline van with a minimal crew.  From Mexico City to Monterrey, from Oaxaca to Ft. Worth, they will meet many different people from many different walks of life, from street people and bar flies, professional media personalities, mariachis, and everybody in between.

The town of Paracho in the state of Michoacán is famous for guitar-makers, and we plan to visit it to befriend at least one local luthier, and purchase his or her guitars for use in performances throughout the trip.

Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City is well-known as a meeting place for mariachi groups, and we will teach them a song or two on the sidewalk, which we will perform with them on the street.

After we travel through Mexico, we will cross the border at Laredo, Texas, and perform at least one show in Texas (San Antonio and/or Austin), enroute to a homecoming show in the DFW area.  Excerpts from the homecoming show will provide the closing scenes of the film.

The closing credits will play over footage of the principals hanging out at Townes Van Zandt's grave, perhaps reading from the Bible, or smoking weed.  Maybe both.

Presupuesto/Budget:

The budget will be minimal, with need for little more than equipment, travel expenses for cast & crew, distribution, and promotion.  The scope of the project is large, but the expenses will not be.

Público Objetivo/Target Audience:

American Migrant tendrá un gran atractivo para todo el mundo, ya que hablará de la sed de libertad, cambio y aventura que es universal en la humanidad.  American Migrant tenderá un puente sobre la brecha política y social que impide que las culturas estadounidense y mexicana encuentren puntos en común y lleguen a un punto de respeto y aprecio mutuos.  La película se esforzará por ser apolítica y por presentar nada más que un grupo de vagabundos musicales que viajan por un paisaje exótico, artístico y de Rock & Roll.  Incluso si los dos personajes principales tocan música folk con guitarras acústicas.  El Rock & Roll es un estado mental.

Está en el corazón.

American Migrant will have wide crossover appeal, as it will speak to the thirst for freedom, change, and adventure that is universal to mankind.  American Migrant will bridge the political and social gap that prevents American and Mexican cultures from finding common ground and coming to a place of mutual respect and appreciation.  The film will go out of its way to be non-political, and to present nothing more than a gaggle of musical vagabonds traveling through an exotic, artful, Rock & Roll landscape.  Even if the two main characters are playing folk music on acoustic guitars.  Rock & Roll is a state of mind.

I am searching for investors for a film to start shooting as early as November.  The crew will be minimal-to-nonexistent, and in addition to an HD camera, promotion, distribution, and travel expenses for a bunch of musicians filming a Rock & Roll road musical across Mexico, love is all we really need.  The film will culminate with a homecoming concert at a theater in the DFW metro area, and the closing credits will roll over footage of the road-weary arthouse refugees visiting Townes Van Zandt's grave, perhaps reading the Bible, or smoking some weed.  The Daily Pecan has already written it up, which I don't understand.

How can something be written up, before it even begins?

So which is it?  A high-brow arthouse "film?"  Or an epic Rock & Roll Western?

Both.  I think it's both.
