Brave Browser: Reinstall Brave Browser and Copy and Paste your old Profile Guide

By EpicSwag | null | 12 Jul 2020

This is a short guide on how to move your old profile into a new clean install of Brave Browser.

This can solve some issues you may have with Brave crashes, as well as give back MOST of the data that you had before you reinstalled Brave.

Download Brave Browser!

This is not 100% guaranteed to fix any, most, or all your problems and please proceed at your own risk.  This does not replace Sync if and when it becomes available.

Before you proceed, do these few things.

1. Create a backup - of your Brave Browser folder

2. Backup your wallet seeds if it is available.

--------------------------

This is not the same as uninstalling and reinstalling Brave. This may seem long, but it is easy and quick.  Basically, you want to copy and replace your old default folder into the new one.

Take note of these locations of your Brave Browser files.

1.  Make sure your Brave Browser is closed and is not running in the background.

2. Navigate to your Brave Browser folder location and locate the default folder or whatever profile you want to move.

Note, if you are using different versions of Brave, just locate that version folder within the /BraveSoftware Folder

Windows PC

  •  C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Local/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/User Data/default/

MacOS

Press Command, Shift, Period (.) to unhide folders and then do one of the following.

  •  /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/default/

Linux

  • /.config/BraveSoftware/ .../default/

3. Make a backup of the OLD default folder.  I usually do backup1 with the largest number being my most recent backup of that specific folder.

4. Open a new explorer or finder window and Navigate into /BraveSoftware/

5. While Brave Browser is closed, rename the NEW Brave-Browser folder to anything else... I usually add "backup" to it.

6. After step 5 has been done, all you need to do is OPEN the browser and it will create another folder... the one that you just renamed.

7. Close Brave Browser and background

8. Navigate to the NEW /Brave-Browser folder where default is also located..

9. Delete the NEW default folder.

10. Copy your backed up OLD default folder and paste into the newest folder where the default folder was.

11. Make sure the folder is renamed back to "default"

12. Open Brave and see if your settings and information has copied over.

If you are still having crashes or problems, it may be better to try and move a few files at a time and see if it gets your settings you want without crashing.

Like always, please let me know if you have other solutions, questions, comments or general things you would like to say.
