I introduced the town of Nonantola here
In the ancient Middle Ages in the Nonantola area, an abbey was founded which over time became a political and religious reference point in the plain currently on the border between the Provinces of Ferrara, Modena, and Bologna.
The importance of the abbey was linked to the fact that: 1) it was located in a border area and 2) it was located along with one of the alternative routes of the so-called Via Romea.
Via Romea: this was the name of the paths that pilgrims traveled on foot to head to Rome and The abbey was one of the stops on the way to the city of Rome.

The abbey is visible from one of the centre of the main route of the old town but remains apart...

... other Palasts are present.

The main boulevard is closed to traffic.

The current appearance of the abbey reflects the changes it has undergone over the centuries.
