Turkey tail - a very popular arboreal mushroom with health properties

By madventure | Nature, Photography | 7 Feb 2024

This very popular mushroom, found almost all over the world, except for Antarctica, has the Latin name Trametes versicolor.

It is classified as a mushroom with healing properties, but mainly in Far Eastern medicine, but in Europe it should be treated more as a dietary supplement.

The fungus, like other related species, is found in all possible localities. These are parks, gardens, orchards, forests and meadows.

It also grows on many species of trees, including beeches, birches, oaks, hazel, willows, maples and other deciduous trees, but sometimes it can also be found on conifers, such as spruces and firs.

The fungus is attached to the substrate sideways, usually in one place there are several individuals growing together, forming clusters in the shape of a fan, in the shape of rosettes, semicircles.

The mushroom can reach a diameter of 10-12 cm. Its surface has characteristic multicolored concentric zones. They can be black, steel-black, brown, brown.

The edge of the mushroom is slightly lighter, usually cream-colored, sharp and covered with hairs.

The hymenophore is tubular, whitish or cream in color, darkens and becomes brown with age. The thin flesh is white in color, tasteless, and the smell is slightly mushroom, almost imperceptible.

The mushroom is considered inedible in Europe, but it is eaten in the Far East and reportedly in Mexico. In Europe, the mushroom can be purchased in dried form as a dietary supplement.

Enjoy 😉
