A little history ...

After World War II, the Bretten Woods agreement was signed in July 1944. It was signed at the United Nations economic conference in Bretton Woods, a small town in the USA. The value of the currency of each country that joined the agreement and agreed to make its money convertible to gold was indexed in dollars. The dollar was adopted as the only national currency that remains convertible to gold. By the agreement, 1 ounce (31.10 g) of gold = $ 35. The US has agreed to convert the dollar to gold over this parity when there is foreign demand.

This system continued until 1971. As the money markets began to deteriorate, the USA removed the dollar's convertibility to gold.
