As mentioned in the last post, in 2023 hackers were able to steal only $1.69 billion. This is 2 times less than in 2022. Now we will talk about the largest hacker attacks of the past year.

Mixin Network

On September 23, hackers attacked cloud server provider Mixin Network. The hackers were able to withdraw $200 million in cryptocurrency. They gained access to the provider's 10,000 largest wallets. Mixin Network management was forced to approach the hackers with a proposal. In particular, they offered the hackers to return the stolen funds. They offered 10% of the stolen amount as a reward.

Euler Finance

In March, hackers attacked the Euler Finance DeFi protocol. They stole $197 million. This event crashed the EUL coin rate by 46%. Somewhat later, the hackers returned 90% of the stolen funds. They kept 10% for themselves as a reward for identifying vulnerabilities.

Multichain

On July 6, hackers attacked the Multichain cross-chain protocol. $126 million in cryptocurrency was stolen. True, the project management managed to freeze funds in the amount of $65 million. At first the project was closed, but in November it was relaunched.

Poloniex

On November 10, the Poloniex cryptocurrency exchange was attacked. Hackers were able to withdraw $126 million worth of cryptocurrency assets. Project manager Justin Sun assured that all customer losses will be compensated. In addition, he indicated that it was possible to detect the hacker who carried out the attack. A certain part of the assets was frozen at addresses that allegedly belonged to the burglar. The hacker was offered a reward of 10 million for the return of the stolen funds.

BonqDAO

In February, hackers attacked the BonqDAO protocol. Thanks to the exploit, it was possible to withdraw $120 million worth of cryptocurrency from the project pool. An exploit is a piece of malicious code that exploits software vulnerabilities in the code. This time the hackers were not able to make much money. The token had low liquidity. Accordingly, the hackers were able to convert only a small part of the stolen funds.

Thus, thanks to these five hacks, $769 million was stolen. Some of the funds were returned. The losses of clients of hacked projects have been compensated. Now many large projects themselves offer rewards to hackers for identifying vulnerabilities. This allows you to avoid hacks and significant losses of money.
