Inktober Day 9, 10 & 11: Pressure, Pick, and Sour

By DoctorPlatypus | Doctor Platypus | 14 Oct 2021

I went away for the weekend and fell a few days behind in my daily discipline, so today I am playing catch-up. Probably tomorrow too.

The prompt for October 9 was 'pressure' and I spent a bunch of time thinking about images that evoke feelings of pressure. I thought about tools like a vice for woodworking, or vice grips for pipe repair, etc. In my life, pressure has typically meant a deadline for some writing or grading project, but I thought a stack of student papers was too depressing and maybe not very fun to draw or look at. I thought this timeclock would maybe be more universal, and would certainly be more interesting to draw:

Not too complex, but probably more evocative than my stack of ungraded student assignments. I think the hand could use a little more work.

The prompt for October 10 was 'pick', and I thought about toothpicks and ice picks and thought neither of those was very interesting shaped. I thought maybe an ice pick in someone's temple? Nah. I thought about miners and pickaxes like they'd use to extract gemstones from the mine wall, etc, and was pretty tempted by that. But honestly, who am I kidding?

In general, I'm pretty happy with how this came out. In the reference photo, his face is more scrunched up, and I think that would probably be the focus of my revisions here when I come back to this one after Inktober ends.

My favorite of these three was the prompt for October 11, 'sour'. I spent the least time agonizing over what to draw. I went to google images and typed the prompt and immediately saw this picture of a baby trying to eat a lemon and I was like "THAT IS THE ONE".
