Inktober Day 8: Teeth

By DoctorPlatypus | Doctor Platypus | 8 Oct 2020

Today's #inktober prompt was "Teeth" and I was this close to drawing Dr. Teeth (of The Electric Mayhem), when I learned that my awesome cousin was going to start participating in Inktober this year and she had already begun drawing that esteemed Muppet. I thought very seriously about creepy teeth-in-a-jar, and then I remembered CHIPS and Erik Estrada and off to the races went I.

I am the first to acknowledge that I need a lot of work on human faces, and I started incorporating color about three days ago, so that's also a new and odd experience. His right eye is way too big, and I am not sure how to fix it at this point, short of starting over, and it turns out I am not a big enough Estrada fan to do his portrait twice haha. I also tried to use different shades of brown to handle the different values of his skin tone, and I ended up with shaded areas where the brown is a bit too reddish, and highlight areas where it is too yellow, and by the time I realized that was going wonky, I was pretty committed to it.

I am pretty happy with how his hair came out, to be honest, but I notice in the reference photo that there's almost a part above his right eye, and his forehead should extend higher before his hairline begins.

Next portrait, I will be more careful about the specific colors I choose and I'll remember that the same colored pencil can be used darker or lighter or with bolder or lighter lines, etc, just like a graphite pencil (or at least not entirely unlike a graphite pencil).

This was fun, and it's good to see practice starting to pay off, and to know what specific things I need to practice further. Would love additional advice if you have any.

Thanks!
