En México es común adaptar palabras de origen inglés (recordemos que tenemos a Estados Unidos de vecino) al español, al parecer este fue el caso de la palabra "chamba". De acuerdo con el sitio web RHT durante los años cuarenta del siglo XX el vecino del norte permitió que legalmente Mexicanos trabajaran en el país (había déficit de trabajadores norteamericanos debido a la segunda guerra mundial), para ello debían presentarse en la oficina de Chamber of Commerce (Cámara de Comercio, en español) cuando los contratos concluían, con la finalidad de que se los renovaran.
Se dice que con el tiempo la palabra "Chamber" se convirtió en "Chamba" dándole el significado de "trabajo" en México; aunque también es probable que se halla adoptado de otros idiomas como el portugués antiguo o el lunfardo durante los siglos de la colonia, en los que la palabra "chamba" era un término despectivo para los campesinos; por lo tanto "hay que chambear" es sinónimo de "tener que trabajar" en México.
