BRD Mobile Wallet

BRD Mobile Wallet

By Ghengis | CryptoLowDown | 26 Jan 2020

BRD - formerly Breadwallet, is a mobile, decentralised crypto wallet.  There are no logins or passwords required.  It uses a 12 word paper key (you must write this down and keep it somewhere safe), connects direct to the blockchain and is fully decentralised, therefore no server to hack and extremely secure.

I got into it when I read they had received $750,000 investment through XSpring, Ripple's investment and development initiative.

It was extremely easy to setup - the hardest part was writing down the 12 word paper key.  The interface is nice, clean and colorful.  I did a small test transfer just to check it out.  It was nice and easy to use and the transfer happened in a few seconds.

Features

The wallet supports a good range of crypto currencies.  To add a new Crypto, simply tap the "Add wallets" option and select The crypto currency of your choice.  There are about 150 coins cùrrently supported.

You can buy/sell straight from the wallet.  It supports 5 different fiat currencies.

BRD Fiat currency Support

You can trade coins for coins - say you want to exchange ETHEREUM for BAT.  It warns that coin exchanges can take up to 6 hours.

It has a rewards system.  If you purchase BRD tokens, you receive differing levels of rewards.

BRD Rewards program

The discount only applies to in-app fees.  3rd party partner fees are not discounted.

It has a Crypto ATM map for the US only.

Issues

My biggest disappointment is that XRP is not yet available.  I have emailed support asking when XRP will be available and I will update this post when I get an answer.

Whilst the in-app fees are quite reasonable (0.5%) the Fiat fees can be quite expensive, according to the reviews I have read.

Ripple invested in BRD in Q4 2019.  At this stage I'm not sure what the integration will be, but I'm assuming it  will enable cross border money transfers using XRP.

CONCLUSION

BRD is a secure, flexible mobile wallet that I'm going to use for my own personal use.

I store the crypto I'm hoddling on my Ledger Nano X offline Hardware Wallet, the crypto I'm actively trading on Upbit Singapore Exchange and BRD will hold my Brave and Publish0X Rewards and if I'm looking to purchase anything using crypto I'll either convert my rewards coins to whatever I need or transfer some stable coin to my wallet.
