Since its role out Brave has done a fantastic job with its AI Leo in maintaining your privacy, a core Brave feature, and developing a very competent and versatile AI tool. Brave has just plain crushed it with the rollout plan. Months before Microsoft partnered with French AI company Mistral Brave did to use Mistral's 8x7B as its default LLM something Microsoft paid billions for!
Now they have continued down the personalization trail with allowing users to bring their own model and their own rules to Leo! As stated by Brave below
This optional new way of using Leo, Brave’s native browser AI, allows users to link it directly with their own AI models. BYOM allows users to run Leo with local models running safely and privately on their own machines. Users will be able to chat or ask questions on webpages (and docs and PDFs) to Leo without their content ever having to leave the device.
By leveraging this privacy is further enhanced if you can believe it as BYOM requests are made directly from the users device to the specified model enpoint bypassing Brave entirely! You talk about safety I mean Brave lets you literally bypass it as well! Brave does not act as an intermediary not have access or visibility into the traffic between the user and the model! This is what I think everyone would love to have with their AI since it ensure end-to-end control!
Since the LLM landscape is changing so rapidly Brave even offers assistance in getting started so that a user does not need any technical knowledge or hardware! For this they suggest Ollama a hobbiest favorite framework that uses a huge list of local models to chose from! Brace offers step by step assistance in not only finding and downloading but also helping users figure out how to plug these models into Leo!
Brave even helps you plug into Remote Models like ChatGPT via their BYOM in Leo. While other third party APIs exist given how popular ChatGPT is Brave tells you how to plug that model into Leo to give you ChatGPT textual inputs and outputs. According to the Brave Team you can "now use Brave Leo with ChatGPT through your OpenAI API account".
While this is currently on the testbed BraveNightly things on BraveNightly once posted about tend to move pretty quickly to the regular Brave Browser platform!
