What happens when Photonic Computing starts to power AI/ML 100X faster than current GPUs and FPGAs?
Without human control, I suspect not much good will come the way of the 'herd', that is "we the people", the general population of this little green planet, third from the sun.
For sure a few people will get rich milking the herd using this tech, it's just our way.
That said, imo AI/ML needs a leash, fast, before this stuff gets completely out of control.
Especially when applied to the new era of AI/ML powered Blockchains & DAOs starting to emerge in the cryptosphere, where AI/ML could actually fund itself via Smart Contracts.
Leash?
Why? Well if it's not yet obvious..,
AI /ML powered Blockchains and Smart Contracts will otherwise, see humankind subsumed by the 'machines'.
Sounds like a scene out of Terminator or the Matrix, (take your pick) right?
What's in a LEASH for AI/ML Powered Blockchains?- a Few Ingredients
Imo, AI/ML must be PoA Proof of Authority (or something similar) controlled within a Geographic Domain Service Framework:
-ie this 'Leash' control decides where and, on what data historical or live feed, AI/ML can operate on and, to whom the AI/ML generated results/propaganda can be delivered,
where such 'results' can only be added into the world of Web 3.0, effectively via PoA multi-signature wallet controlled (by elected "we the people" human vetted and authorized) Smart Contract, Yeah a Smart Contract LEASH if you like.
Barbeque Lighter Fluid for the Fast Burning AI/ML Blockchain fire- Photonic Computing is coming
Photonic Computing is poised to be re-powering AI/ML existing FaaS 'Functions as a Service' (ie AMZ Lambda) in the coming few years. Photonic Computing Processor Units and Memory operate much like the human brain does in scanning, remembering and taking action on incoming data to produce a result, working 100X faster than today's GPUs and FPGAs delivering the same capability electrically. Very cool 2022 break through tech, a seminal event in computing for sure.
About 1 year ago I wrote about the LEASH concept centred around Fast Storage as a Service, Crypto Pay4Use.
Then, I never anticipated at the time, how quickly AI/ML technology would surge forward to the point where we will witness a 100X speed up in AI/ML execution within 2 to 3 years also requiring a LEASH, because of these Photonic Computing rapid advances in fabrication and packaging using off the shelf Standards-based electrical and optical components.
Some existing AI/ML frameworks operating as FaaS Action Request services in the Cloud, within this projected time frame, will indeed be 're-powered' by hybrid electro-optically connected Photonic Computing and Memories specifically designed to execute the matrix multiplication tasks (inherent to the operation of most all AI/ML convolutional neural networks) 100X faster.
Re-powered AI/ML FaaS really means a DevOps Admin re-directing existing FaaS Action Requests written for Amazon's Lambda service or similar and deploying that same Action Request with a Photonic Computing Powered FaaS Cloud Service. The latter will soon be able to employ a new breed of composable Photonic Computing Node capable of executing the same Action Request 100 times faster than Nvidia or Intel GPUs currently doing the same job today. This soon to be old tech is today found 'under the hood" powering the Big FaaS Cloud Services of Amazon, Alibaba, Google, Microsoft and IBM servicing Enterprise FaaS Action Requests, which are charged by the millisecond.
The real eye opener here is that Photonic Computing is really super-fast Analog Computing operating on 10% of the electrical power budget consumed today by those power hungry GPUS currently providing the resources needed by AI/ML FaaS Action Requests. So if you want Green Computing, then Photonic Computing for AI/ML , in the right energy saving form, can be here in two years or less.
For those Enterprises running FaaS today in the cloud, Photonic Computing (Likely 5 to 10 years ahead of the real arrival of commercial Quantum Computing) will soon address the really BIG ELEPHANT in the AI/ML world today, which is the AI/ML demand for compute power is currently DOUBLING every three to four months and is UNSUSTAINABLE within the next two years.
In the mean time buy stock in small companies effectively competing with NVIDIA and Intel GPUs? Maybe.
Employing Photonic Computing Processing Units and Memories to execute FaaS Matrix and Vector Multiplications because of the power savings and the re-use of OTS Off the Shelf manufacturing and packaging techniques coupled with OTS electrical and optical components, means anyone running FaaS Action Requests on the Cloud today can expect not only 100X better performance, but at least an order of magnitude better price/performance than current FaaS Cloud Service offerings.
Ok what does this means to the average person on the street?
Well certainly we all stand to benefit from the boost Photonic Computing will give our smartphone AI/ML powered chat agents being that much smarter and much more responsive in helping get us the answers to our interactive chat or "SIRI" posed questions.
Putting a LEASH on a Photonic Computing Powered Cryptosphere of AI/ML Powered Blockhains and DAOs
As far as the Cryptosphere is concerned,
Photonic Computing Powered "PCP" AI/ML Blockchains are poised to fix some of the really big problems out there as it applies to crypto community instant voting on design change requests and, IF applied properly with good business ethics, which could have us all see PCP AI/ML successfully rebooting and growing the distributed nature and original intent of BTC and cryptocurrency again.
In other words,
Photonic Computing powered AI/ML is a useful configuration which can either help de-centralize the cryptosphere, improve transparency and keep the cryptosphere working to grow the prosperity of "We the People",
or
PCP AI/ML can be also used to perpetuate existing Whale market manipulation shenanigans in many areas of the cryptophere as we know it today.
Photonic Computing where are you now?
Earlier work between 2015 and 2019 by Photonic experts at Oxford and Exeter Universities in the UK coupled with expert efforts originating at Universities Muenster and Munich in Germany have both powered and inspired the recent early 2022 break thru in hybrid electro-optical designs and commercial packaging of Photonic Processing Unit, Switching and Memory chips designed, built and validated at University of Pittsburgh's Youngblood Photonics Lab "YPL", with some collaboration from experts at the Universities of Washington (West coast). YPL has a legitimate brain trust in that the lab's founder Nathan Youngblood (USA) toiled away at Oxford in the earlier iterations of Photonic Computing emulating the brain, so called photonic computing brain bio-mimicry. Imo, an Oxford University/UK loss for sure and, a big gain for the USA.
Suffice it to say that these same experts and their break through Photonic Computing tech do 'stand on the shoulders' of earlier photonic experts who have been toiling away on Photonic/Analog Computing challenge since the 1950s.

TK's Initial Observations: 'Top 5' AI Powered Blockchains? hmmmm. muh.
My first skim of the 101blockchains post of the "Top 5" and the various associated websites listed above, show each of these projects are tackling different use cases in their efforts to differentiate their offering. (provided some of them are even running)
A Few of "them there" AI/ML powered "Top 5" Blockchains are also focused on "Green" save the planet themes (It's like bad hip hop, I just wish it would stop). ;)
TKO Rant :) - Really I thought 'green washing' had faded in 2022, given the EU has now declared Nuclear and Natural Gas as green sources of energy. :) This whole green marketing thing, like the 'I stand with Ukraine" (trafficking capital of the world) positioning, both imo, are like a piece of toilet paper stuck to your foot which wont let go no matter how hard you shake it. Seriously, when it comes to Climate Change and the green thing, it's the Sun, we have entered and are in the grand solar minimum, global cooling is a reality, as we enter a new area of the galaxy with much higher UV and Infrared passing around a smaller SUN corona to produce a white Sun light in our atmosphere which will actually be greening the planet even faster, especially in those geographic areas not adversely affected so much by the global cooling, a phase into which we are now descending rapidly. As I am old enough to remember I grew up under a yellow Sun, I can safely say, yes the climate is changing and, there is not a damned thing we can do about it. It's the Sun and the Galaxy so get over it. My daily rant is now complete. lol.. ;)
What is clear about all the positioning going on in this AI/ML emerging space, per this 101blockchains post, is not one of these listed projects is addressing the BIG Elephant in the AI/ML Powered Blockchain room, which is the conundrum "how does humankind stay in control of AI/ML while still benefiting from the features offered by AI/ML powered blockchains without AI taking over humanity(and the cryptocurrency money supply)?"
Seriously, to cut to the chase, all of these projects need an AI/ML Powered Blockchain LEASH, not to mention they all need some use case focus.
As for Blackbird? It is what it is, a Censorship tool which could be tied into a blockchain sure and, it probably has somebody doing that right now.(Just what we all need, more AI powered Censorship which stored information forever.Not.)
As such I'll keep hunting for an AI/ML powered Blockchain project with its own built in LEASH functions. I am not hopeful.
The AI powered Blockchain market imo is 'super early stage embryonic', show me I am wrong in the comments section. ;)
