BlackRock-Backed Treasury Bonds Are Available on the XRP Network

Ondo Finance, in collaboration with Ripple, has definitively integrated tokenized Treasury bonds, known as OUSG, into the XRP Ledger (XRPL) network. This initiative allows institutions to access a financial product backed by US Treasury bonds, trading directly on this network designed for institutional adoption.

OUSG, which stands for Ondo Short-Term US Government Bond Fund, is a token backed by real-world assets, specifically BlackRock's BUIDL fund, which invests in short-term US Treasury bonds. Ripple's statement repeatedly uses the word "institutions," implying that OUSG will not be available to regular users of the network.

These tokenized bonds offer exposure to traditional assets within a distributed ledger and programmable network (blockchain). Tokenization allows for fast, 24/7 trading of these bonds. At the time of writing, the average transaction cost through XRPL is $0.0038, and its network processes around 27 transactions per second.

This token is available for minting and redemption using RLUSD, Ripple's stablecoin, eliminating the need to maintain multiple liquidity accounts in different cryptocurrencies.

Ondo Finance continues to lead the way in real-world asset tokenization, with over USD 1.3 billion in total value locked (TVL), now expanding support to XRPL. OUSG was the first tokenized security to achieve material adoption and, with over USD 670 million in TVL, remains one of the largest tokenized treasury products in the market, alongside offerings from BlackRock and Franklin Templeton. Now, for the first time, Qualified Buyers can seamlessly subscribe for and redeem OUSG into XRPL around the clock, using RLUSD as a stable settlement asset.

Qualified Purchasers, in this context, are investors who meet specific criteria established by U.S. securities laws. These criteria determine who can participate in certain investment opportunities, such as the acquisition of tokenized assets on the XRPL.

Those enabled by XRPL to use tokenized assets can acquire, transfer, and redeem OUSG directly on the network. This allows institutional and retail investors to diversify their portfolios with an asset considered stable, backed by real Treasury bonds.

It also allows crypto-native institutions to access traditional tokenized financial products without much friction. The collaboration between Ripple and Ondo, as evidenced by this tokenization of treasury bonds, is aimed at developing the real-world asset (RWA) industry, a priority area for both companies.
