What is GIF DAO?
It is a DAO for the creation and governance of games on the Tezos blockchain. The created games allow their players to collect, earn and trade all kinds of virtual assets like tokens and NFTs that have actual utility within their game.
GIF was the very first project that has raised funds on the decentralized Rocket Launchpad that has since merged with Crunchy Finance. The project has also partnered with different Tezos dApps like PlentyDeFi and allowed its liquidity providers to earn more GIF tokens. Thanks to that the DAO is well known and popular in the Tezos community.
Currently there is only one game that is being built by the DAO. It is called Tezotopia, which is one of the most used dApps on Tezos and is a Play2Earn game. On the game you can buy or create your own tezotop, that is a NFT land parcel, where you can mine different in-game resources that you can use to build and fight or you can sell them. The game also features "Diplomats" that are a NFT collection like Punks or Bored Apes, but they aren't only useless jpegs that can be screenshotted but can be used in-game to govern your tezotop and fight battles.
Tezotopia is the most played game on Tezos and its Tezotop and Diplomat NFTs can be sold for multiple hundreds of dollars’ worth of XTZ on the native marketplace of the game. There is also a fungible token that represents the most important in-game recourse called Unobtanium that is being distributed to Tezotop owners and can also be freely traded on the Quipuswap DEX and on the PlentyDeFi DEX.
That’s only the first game under the GIF DAO and its being developed further. GameFi and Play2Earn are becoming increasingly more popular but are far behind on Tezos right now and GIF could fill that hole. There is only one strong competitor on Tezos called PixelPotus that is creating a NFT trading card game. If the NFT and blockchain game hype continues and the Tezos ecosystem keeps growing, then GIF could grow to be a big player in that field.
The GIF Token
GIF is the governance token of the GIF DAO. It gives its holders the right to create proposals and vote on them, it also can be used to obtain different perks in related games or early access to any new game. There have also been airdrops of in-game assets to GIF holders and this could happen again.
There is a total supply of 100,000,000 GIF tokens. 20% were sold in the initial DEX offering on the Rocket Launchpad and another 10% were sold in a private sale, 13% went to the team and their advisors, 3% were used for liquidity pools on DEXes, 4% were used for airdrops to the community and the remaining 50% are held in a treasury that releases 10,000,000 token every 6 months that are used for rewards, partnerships and to grow its ecosystem, the token holders are able to vote on what happens with the funds in the treasury. A part of the treasury has been used for yield farms on Crunchy and PlentyDeFi were you could stake GIF/XTZ or GIF/PLENTY liquidity pool tokens to earn more rewards.
The value of the GIF token depends on how many people play its games and on how valuable its NFTs become. If many tezotops and diplomats are being sold for hundreds of dollars’ worth of XTZ, then there will also be a demand for controlling a share of the DAO. If more is being built with the DAO there will also be more demand to get early access to new games and possible airdrops. However, NFTs seem to be in a bubble and interest in them seems to be falling currently and since Tezotopia as well as any other blockchain game strongly depends on them, they could take a hit from falling interest in NFTs.
The GIF token is currently not listed on any large centralized exchange, but you can buy it on Quipuswap and the PlentyDeFi DEXes if you have some XTZ. You can use a Temple Wallet to store you tokens and to interact with the Tezotopia game.
