tl;dr: Having no expectations means having no disappointments.

I guide a bi-weekly meditation session and one of my “go-to” moves is a passage from “How to Sit” by Thich Nhat Hanh.

This past week, I chose a reading called “What To do.”

The primary part of is is:

“You should sit without waiting for a miracle, and that includes the miracle of enlightenment. If you always sit in expectation, you are not in the present moment.”

A few of the attendees remarked on this concept and, how in our day to day lives, even during Covid, we are frequently expecting something instead of being present.

I’d been mulling this one over for a bit and then came across this gem from Seneca in the Daily Stoic app before my morning sit today.

“The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune’s control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.”

If there’s one thing that I believe we’ve all taken from the Pandemic, it’s just how uncertain life can be.

I remember reading the 2021 predictions from a well-regarded/famous person back in January 2021. I was remarking how, at that time, he said not a word about Bitcoin.

But I recently went back to read it again and, obviously, he had said nothing about the Pandemic.

Not that he could have known, but it reminded me of the futility of predictions, which are expectations of themselves.

Hanh’s and Seneca’s advice is a great reminder-for me at least- about continuing to pull back the horizon of expectations to focus on the present moment.

At this moment, I am blogging for myself, but I am also aware that some other people will read it.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have a morning time when I can reflect on things like this and I am grateful to have a community of friends who take the time to reflect with me.
