Italian Police Seizes 14 Tonnes of Counterfeit Captagon Pills

Italian police officials state that about 84 million counterfeit Captagon pills worth an estimated 1.1 billion United States dollars were discovered hidden in containers at the port of Salerno. The 14 tonnes of amphetamine and theophylline are suspected of being made in Syria to help finance the Islamic State militant group. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, and attempting to figure out whether local crime groups are involved.

Captagon is a brand name for phenethylline, a codrug of amphetamine and theophylline originally used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, but was banned by numerous nations in the 1980s due to its addictive properties.
