In an attempt to combat the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, the English government stated that starting on Monday, June 15th, 2020, anyone travelling on public transportation such as buses, trains, ferries, and planes in England must wear a face covering. However, these rules do not apply to school transport, taxis, and private hire vehicles, and only apply while travelling - not while waiting. Those failing to wear a face covering could be refused onboard or fined 100 pounds (125 United States dollars) though people with certain health conditions, disabled people, and children under 11 years-old will be exempt from the rule.

Over 3,000 extra staff such as security officers and police officers will be deployed to stations and transportation hubs to make sure people follow the rules. As well, hundreds of thousands of free coverings will be handed out at select railway stations.

As of now, there are over 296,000 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus in the United Kingdom alongside 41,698 Covid-19-related mortalities.
